I was delighted when Sam responded to my "2-day-before" email and was available to lead me on a morning nature walk. Sam was raised in the Bridgewater area and is passionate about the wilderness. He knows each sprout, tree, stump, rock, and foot placement on the trail, as he's spent his entire life observing the changes. He continually improves his knowledge on botany, biology, guiding, woodcraft, primitive camping, and other wilderness skills. I was captivated as he enthusiastically shared his knowledge while leading me through a forest he's known all his life. I highly recommend Sam's Woodland Tours to anyone who wants to enjoy a woodlands walk.

My husband and I were delighted how Sam showed us so many details around trees, plants, animal behaviour at a depth that we never expected. Sam is a well studied, knowledgeable guide for sure! More than worth the $20 a person fee. What a treat!!!

Called Sam and he was open to a last minute booking for just myself to walk through the area and basically look at taste and learn about plants and the ecology of the area.
Really nice guy, enthusiastic about what he's showing you, and open to questions. Had some tea from leaves we collected that was pretty tasty.
Walk isn't strenuous as often stopping and there is so much around there is no need to cover a large area.
Definitely recommend this to anyone in the area as something quite different to what else you can experience and give you a great perspective on the Nova Scotian lands.

I had the pleasure, along with my daughter and her friend (who are both 13) to have a nature walk with Sam Wentzell this past week. He offers two types of tours, the Woodland Tours (which we did) and the Rail Trail Tours. I had been having a bit of trouble narrowing down an exact date which we could do the tour due to changes in vacation plans, but Sam was very prompt in responding to my emails and very accommodating in arranging a time that would work for us. When we arrived at the trail, he greeted us and offered water, bug repellent and walking sticks to use.
As we began walking the trail his enthusiasm for the outdoors and his deep love and respect for nature quickly became evident. The trail was easy to walk, although you do of course have to watch your step for rocks and roots and so on. Sam is extremely knowledgeable in tree and plant identification, and with every few steps pointed out which were edible and/or had medicinal uses and which were poisonous, and emphasized the importance in cross-referencing to make sure you know which plant you dealing with. Sam also has in depth knowledge of bushcrafting and wilderness survival skills, and can work a mean bow-drill! The best thing about the tour was Sam's ability to make everything really interesting, as he provided a story or history lesson to accompany many of the plants and trees he was talking about in a very entertaining manner. I wish that history was taught to our kids this way!
I highly recommend doing one of Sam's tours to anyone visiting this beautiful area of Nova Scotia, and I hope to be able to return again sometime soon to do the Rail Trail Tour to learn some of the history of the Bridgewater area. Thank you Sam for sharing your wealth of knowledge of the plants, trees and wildlife that are right outside our doors!

The trail was well groomed and easy to walk on and the tour guide (Sam Wentzell) was informative and entertaining. We recommend this to anyone who is in the Bridgewater area with an hour and a half to explore Bridgewater's beauty and interesting history.
