The church could have retained its historical value had not the Catholic community modernized the facade of the church.What makes the church a must-see for tourists is that its original altar was designed by the country's national hero during his three-year exile in the province in late 1800.A marker installed by the historical institute near the entrance proves the claims of church administrators.What is inside is the modern version of the old church.Its the only landmark left to remind people of its connection with the colonizers. The old municipio, which was the exact replica of the municipal hall of Maribojoc built by the Americans was totally modernized without any semblance of the old structure left.
It's not anymore very hot inside since it has industrial-sized ceiling electric fans. Better seat near the side entry doors for the cooler air blowing into the building.If you prefer an air-conditioned house of worship, there is one in nearby barrio Santa Filomena but smaller compared to the cathedral. One thing good during Mass here is that its parish priest delivers thought-provoking homilies during the celebration.
If your want to see a really Spanish-time church go the nearby Dapitan parish church where an earthen map of Mindanao, which was installed by the national hero, still exist.All the other landmarks in the city are recent creations.There are some masses celebrated in English, contrary to earlier review where the mass is said in the native language of the place.

This is a beautiful Catholic Church; probably the most beautiful I have seen. You would not expect such a beautiful church in such a small city. It is a must see.

Beautiful church, and inside it's quite a sight. I'm told it's from the spanish times. Impressive to find such an interior in a small city.

Constructed by the Spanish friars in April 15, 1894, records show that the original altar was designed by Dr. Jose Rizal, the sketch of the altar was inspired after that of San Ignacio Church in Manila.

i LOVE THIS CHURCH A LOT.. this is just a walk away from many food stalls but the best part here is the church is historical and what i love here is praying together with my hubby and my kid.. they love the serenity and the archetural design of the church for you can truly feel the holiness of it...

The star of the show here is the ceiling. It is all wood and really beautiful. Otherwise, it is a pretty standard 19th C church here

We heard mass here during our visit to Dipolog. We walked from our hotel to the church- a short 6 minute walk. Surprising to see that despite its size, the church was still packed. It was done in the local dialect so it was difficult for me to follow at times. Now if they could do something about the ventilation. It was hot and humid inside though we had gotten a spot near a door. But all in all, it wasn't bad. The church was huge and inspiring with a long walk from the entrance to the altar. High ceilings and quite spacious.

The cathedral has a bit of history attached to it. The altar was designed by the philippine national hero, Rizal. The facade is quite modern and a bit disappointing due to the historical value of the place. I would have preferred if they tried to retain the original design instead of giving it a totally new facelift.
