下午，我們驅車來到這個9400英尺的遊客中心，目的是為了找到一個停車位。一旦停車場滿了，他們就把車開走。外面的節目大約6點30分開始，但是在遊客中心有一部相當不錯的電影來打發時間。還有遠足和野餐的餐桌。如果你需要的話，該中心還賣運動衫，運動褲，無檐帽和手套。該望遠鏡從6:30到晚上10:00開放，星座演講大約在7點45分左右開始。那裡很冷，需要準備一下。總的來說，我們真的很享受這次經歷。

下午去得比較晚。因為道路的等級，你的確需要四輪驅動系統的車。把你的油箱加滿(他們不會讓你在油箱內的油不到1/2的時候還讓你到頂上去)，穿一些比較保暖的衣服，多帶水。在護林員休息站適應一會兒，然後再往前！！景色令人驚嘆，落日霞光非常壯觀。

我們抵達的時候正值日落，所以我們只能看了遊客中心附近區域的一些景觀。我們為了夜間觀星活動而來。觀星只要帶一隻有紅透鏡的手電筒就好了。我添加的這張圖片是在遊客中心左側的山頂拍攝的。

我們住在科納的時候参觀過兩次。對孩子和成年人來說，周末的自由凝視是一件很有趣的事情。很難在雲計算中規劃出缺口，但是維斯網站在協助天氣規劃方面做得很好，或者在峰會上進行遠足或開車，我記得它提供了兩次詳細的報告。停車場可能會很忙，但附近有一些短程的小路，還有一些絕佳的拍照機會。穿暖和點。它可以是35度在科納,5(攝氏)90分鐘后在這裏，或者更冷。

旅途物有所值。日落非常壯觀，哪怕是有雲也能看見。停車有空位。這裏對於汽車有限制，所以要早點去，或者預約一個導遊。但是停車場對面的日落山的日落景色也非常棒。如果你沒有司機但就是想看看日落的話，停車場滿了的時候你可以停在半山腰一個小停車場。爬上山看美景！非常值得一試。可以在日落山上好好拍拍照片。

我們來這裡是為了看這裏的日落和美好的星光景象，這裏從星期二到星期六都開放，所以你去之前一定要檢查一下日期是否合適，雲朵覆蓋在海平面上，所以你很難猜測VIS的天氣怎麼樣，所以一定要檢查你的網絡攝像頭確保它開着，這裡有六個望遠鏡，可以查看不同的東西，木星很漂亮，你可以看到它上面的條紋，其實那是四個小衛星，這家商店是一個不錯的熱身的地方，這裏出售茶、咖啡、和熱可可，這裏還有關於星座的 傳說和一些歷史，不幸的是冥王星已經不符合行星的標準了，總之這次旅行很愉快、自由。

在看完日落和星星后，我們停在從山頂下來的的訪客中心。訪客中心本身不是令人興奮的，但是有一些望遠鏡所以你可以近距離的觀察星星，這個很酷。亮點是一個新學生用激光來為我們指出星座。

我們按照建議在這停留了一段時間，以便我們可以適應這裏的海拔。不確定這樣做是否有必要，因為我們平時生活在更高的海拔地區。但，額好吧。。。這兒有好多人。這裏很適合觀光，很明顯是為了容納旅行團而設計，因為這裏可以容納許多人。這的衛生間還不錯。禮品店的東西過貴，裏面有許多稀奇古怪的東西。作為打發時間的一種方式，觀看介紹視頻是一個很不錯的選擇。這裏放置了兩台望遠鏡，用以觀看太陽（在白天）。在晚上回來的路上，我們在這根本沒有停留，因為這裏的人太多了，這是根本不值得的。

Can you share information on the temperature we may expect in the Visitor Centre after sunset? I have found some information on temperature at the summit but understand the temperature around the Visitor Centre will be higher.

nope, please plan accordingly when you are crossing the Big Island - from west to east and then east to west the next day it took 50% of our gas tank! we had an suv (you dont need it really) there are signs there when you start driving from the west coast i believe also that there is no service for 50+ miles or so

No. There is almost nothing at all between Hilo and Kona on that road. There is a campground in the mountan pass and access to the two peaks (by road or trail) and that is all.

Not 2021, but we were there in Nov and they didn’t have the park guide providing the free talks. Only saw some guides that were paid as an excursion. Not sure whats changed in last 2 months

There is so much conflicting info online. I can't figure out what's open or not. I'll be there in October. Can I even drive up here at this point with the telescope drama? Is there still free stargazing going on at nights?

There is no more free stargazing unless you want to risk it and hope there's an amateur astronomer with a telescope there when you go.

Hello, due to the recent protests around the Mauna Kea summit, I would like to understand that if we book a trip for stargazing with anyone of these companies, what should be expected? What will be the alternative to the Mauna Kea summit?

After reading a CNN report ( a reliable source) about this protest, since I was not familiar with it until now, it appears that your best bet is to inquire locally with the tour companies, just as Stephen J suggested. The photo on CNN news doesn't show where the protest is, but one on MTV news shows clearly that the protest is set up right at the beginning of the road up to the visitor center, as well as to the top. (there is only one road.) Given what I saw on these two news sites, and what is stated there, it is highly doubtful that any tour group is getting through, since even scientists were blocked for awhile.
I would check locally before I booked a tour. Be cautious about shelling out money to a tour group without a *written* guarantee that if they cannot get through the access road to the top, your money will be returned.
As an aside, the CNN site was a general news feature, but the MTV site went into depth about the natives' reasons for the protest.

The Mauna Kea access road is blocked right now - you cannot go up the mountain - you can see stars from all over from the Big Island, but the higher you go, the clearer they are until about 8,500 foot elevation - above that your eye distorts due to low pressure - make sure you are clear where they are taking you star gazing and to what elevation - anywhere is good except Mauna Kea mountain - you can also drive by yourself to one of the mountains and look up with an iPhone app which identifies the stars through the iPhone camera

BEGINNING MONDAY, JUNE 3, 2019
Due to safety concerns associated with the ingress/egress construction project near the Visitor Information Station (VIS), the VIS will be closed to all vehicular and pedestrian access at ~7:30 am on Monday, June 3, 2019. The area will remain closed 24 hours a day until the project is complete. Please be aware of construction workers, traffic, and signage directing visitors to an informational booth which will be open from 8am-3pm daily. Portable toilets will be available 24/7. Mahalo for your patience and understanding as we continue to improve the Visitor Information Station!
