A friend and I spent some time yesterday exploring some of the historic sites in the area. We had visited Fort Laurens. Zoar Village, and Schoenbrun Village earlier. We had a great time, learning about the history of those places.

When we got here, the museum was closed but had a sign on the door with numbers to call. We opted not to call but explored the area. A historic marker explains what happened here about 250 years ago. An obelisk monument stands as a reminder to the 90 who were massacred here. Replica buildings from that time period are on the grounds. A mound with the remains of some of those who were killed is also here. Markers on graves tell of some important historical figures buried there. This was also the birthplace of the first white settler, a boy, to Ohio.

A moving experience for sure! Too bad the museum was closed.

This was a gruesome history lesson. The free parking is a short drive on a road connected to the local cemetery. At that point there is a museum which has a short video and some artifacts, along with a gift shop. On site is a mass grave, monument, and replica structures. There is a historical marker for you to read if you don't want to go in the museum.

This park is a memorial to the Lenape
Christians who were massacred in 1782. It has the mass grave, information signs and an obelisk monument as well as the museum. We were there on a Saturday and the museum was closed. A note said to call a number to get it opened, but we elected to not wait. A sad testament to the brutality of both sides in the revolution.

Gnadenhutten, Ohio’s oldest existing settlement, is a nice village but the 1782 Massacre was one of the darkest days in Ohio's history. Small museum was closed when I visited but was able to look around and view the 35 foot obelisk (which I think was erected on the 100th anniversary of the massacre).

My friend and I were staying in a B & B in Gnadenhutten and our host suggested we might like to go to the little museum there in town. She did state that you had to call ahead to get someone to unlock the door and stay while you visited so she volunteered to call someone to do that. A nice lady met us there and let us in and was very nice to answer all of our questions about the area. I even had a question about Cy Young (the baseball player) being from the area and she showed me a book about his life. The massacre that occurred there was very sad but it was a piece of history that I wasn't familiar with. I would like to go back sometime and see the play The Trumpet in the Land about the event that happened there. Make sure you call ahead and get someone to unlock the door for you or you probably won't get in.

We planned out trip in part to go to the museum but unfortunately it was closed and no one answered the phone. We left a message that we would return the next day but no call back.

That being said we were able to look around and look into the buildings they the windows. As a Moravian, the massacre was something we learned about.

I would recommend visiting, the area is rich in history. We will return someday and make arrangement to make sure we get to see the Museum and see the outdoor drama which tells the story.

In addition to many artifacts of American Indians that lived in the area the museum tells the history of a tragic massacre on this site and American missionaries who befriended them.

This is something nice to do in a afternoon. Gnadenhuttwn is a small town with alot of history. They use to have indian festivals here years ago. Not sure if that's something they still do or not. But it was really awesome and memorable
