A group of three of us joined a larger group yesterday to visit both FLW homes in Manchester. We enjoyed ourselves very much and learned a great deal about FLW, his architectural approach, materials used, contractors, his relationships with the Zimmermans, etc. The guides were excellent, their passion for the homes infectious.

We were able to tour the grounds and see each of the houses. I guess it took a couple of hours, in total. You purchase tickets in advance, take a shuttle to the first house, walk or shuttle to the second house (3 doors down) and then take the shuttle back to the Currier museum, minutes away.

We were allowed to take pictures, just no flash photography.

I am not necessarily drawn to architecture or famous architects, but the tour expanded my knowledge and was quite fascinating.

After the tour, we spent some time at the Currier museum (free with tour tickets) and ate lunch at the museum cafe. The museum itself is very impressive!

The houses are not open in the winter, so plan accordingly.

Have Fun!

How exciting to find two Frank Lloyd Wright houses on the same street in Manchester. We were headed to the airport and decided we had to ride by and check them out. Both homes are located on Heather Street and are under the care of the Currier Museum of Art. Frank Lloyd Wright designed the first house for his friends, Dr. and Mrs. Isadore Zimmerman, in 1950 at 223 Heather Street. Wright was able to design a home around the natural rocks and features of New Hampshire. Though only 1,458-square feet, the built-in furniture, continuous concrete floor mat, large windows, and dramatic changes in ceiling height imparts a sense of great spaciousness. After Zimmerman died in 1988, the house was acquired by the museum.

The next home is called the Kalil House and is located at 117 Heather Street. It was built in 1955 for Dr. Toufic and Mildred Kalil. This is a completely different house than the Zimmerman House. We were happy to be able to see both homes, if only from the street. You need to contact the Currier Museum to arrange a tour.

We visited here today to see both of Frank Lloyd Wright designed properties in Manchester. The 1951 Zimmerman House is a pleasing Usonian style with its long shape and extended overhang for a carport while the 1955 Kalil House seems extreme with its bold modular concrete block.
Both are easily seen from the quiet high end Heather Street.

My husband and I have been to several FLW homes - Taliesin West, Falling Waters and the FLW "block" in Milwaukee. So remarkable and each different. A few years ago, we discovered this gem almost literally in our backyard; the Currier Museum had acquired the house in 1988 and offered small tours. This house is a splendid example of FLW's style and work and sits on a quiet, unassuming street. If you are staying in or around Manchester and have the slightest interest, put this on your list of "don't miss" places to visit.

This house tour leaves from the Currier Museum in a small bus. On the way the docent explains the history of the owners, shows their prior home and the neighborhood. The house is a longer and narrow one, still completely furnished including personal objects and clothing. The docents take pride in their work and are extremely passionate about presenting this house. I thoroughly enjoyed it and recommend. Your ticket includes admission to the Currier, so plan your time accordingly.

Personally, I was disappointed. It's a small FLW house, built for the common people. The short furniture was supposed to make it look bigger, but it looked like a hobbit house -- or at least one that would kill your knees.
I enjoy similar places, but found this disappointing. I like "tiny homes." It did not hold my interest at all and I just thought, I wouldn't recommend this to a friend. But to be fair, a FLW lover may think the place is great.

I didn't have that much knowledge about Frank Lloyd Wright in advance but I feel like I learned a lot on the tour. The house was very interesting with a very particular style and architecture that is both confining and expansive. The house is very long, taking up two lots but also very narrow. The guides said that he used the idea of compression and then expansion so that passageways were very narrow and then it felt much bigger when you get into the rooms. Unlike most other Frank Lloyd Wright houses, this one retains the original furniture that was designed by him. We had to wear booties and touch nothing.
We met at the Currier Museum and then bussed over to the house. Our two guides, Wayne and Jeanne, were characters, but not in the best way. It was obvious that they detested each other and Wayne kept contradicting Jeanne and trying to take over the tour. When she wanted to show us a video of the Zimmerman family on the bus he went on and on about how he doesn't use the video and that she shouldn't show it. It was quite rude. When we had to break up into two groups I beelined for Jeanne, who seems to be a much nicer person. They both seemed knowledgeable, but should never work together.
On the way back we stopped by another Frank Lloyd Wright house in the neighborhood. The owners had been friends with the Zimmermans so had Frank Lloyd Wright build one for them too. The house had a very different style. We couldn't go in the house, which was on the market, but it was cool to see it from the outside.
Overall I enjoyed the tour and would definitely recommend it.

Schedule your trip around this experience, and fill in the rest of your day.
Tickets are bought at the Currier Museum and a shuttle carries you on the round trip. A very friendly docent shares some of Wright's design concepts and how he shaped the house to meet the demands of the landscape and the desires of the owners.
Unbelievable detail is lavished on the construction and I don't think it could be duplicated today.
We thoroughly enjoyed the initmate tour and learned a lot along the way. A good trip.

Went to the Currier and caught the little bus that transports you have to the Zimmerman House. It was a chilly day and we started off outside for a bit of an orientation and introduction. The tour was about 90 minutes-it was a very good tour with lots of info. It isn’t Robie House or Taliesin but it was a very nice tour.

We visited this 1950s Usonian Frank Lloyd Wright house last September. It is important that you reserve a place for the tour in advance since it sells out rather quickly—especially in high season.
The meeting area for the tour in the lobby of the Currier Art Museum in Manchester, New Hampshire. The museum owns and maintains the house and tours. The excellent docents load the participants on a mini-bus who are then transported the short distance to the Isadore and Lucille Zimmerman House.
The tour is about an hour with access to the building and grounds; no pictures are allowed in the house, and all visitors must wear paper booties to tour.
This is the only FLW house in New England open for public tours.
Visit the Currier Museum galleries afterwards; they are excellent and included with your tour ticket
