We started a weekend trip by going to Brown County but were disappointed by how crowded it was. The closest hotel we could get was in Martinsville and saw this state forest was nearby. The winding road through the park was gorgeous and full of fall colors! Unfortunately the lookout tower was closed on Sunday but there’s plenty of colorful trails to take. We ended up taking the Scouting trail, supposed to be pretty short. This trail turned out to be plenty for us. Beautiful scenery and we didn’t run into any other hikers on the trail! We will likely return to this quiet retreat!

My wife and I walked on the newly paved asphalt trail in Morgan Monroe State Forest with her wheelchair. This was a wonderful walk into the wilderness of dense tall trees. I'm in my late 60s and I was able to manage the trail on the rolling hills.
We parked at the entrance to the Mason Ridge Campground next to a large fire tower that is located the Main Forest Road. The trail started with two very steep hills. When we walk the trail again, I will start at the trail on the south end of the parking lot by the State Forest Headquarters Building to skip these steep hills. The trail had gentler rolling hills on the trail from this point. The hills did require some effort to push up and down the hills. But it was worth it as we had a wonderful October day with the leaves turning colors. All in all it was a great day for a trip into the woods. We walk for an hour one way on the trail and then turn around so we probably were able to cover about half of the 5 mile trail. This two hour round trip was about my limit.
Hope to come back some day with our kids and grandkids to do the whole five miles with their help. Thank you to the State of Indiana for giving us the opportunity to again enjoy the wilderness together as we did so often in our younger days.

Rock Shelter Hike inside Morgan Monroe State Forest was a great 3 mile family hike. Mostly tree covered so provided plenty of shade for a warm day. Moderate hike as there is a decent grade to walk down and up to/from the rock shelter that gives the hike its name. The area inside the state forest does not have amenities - I did not see a vault toilet; no visitor center; etc. This is not a state park - but there is no entrance fee which is a nice bonus.

Morgan Monroe has trail options for all ability levels, including a paved trail several miles long. Limestone outcroppings, hiking over ridge tops and over flowing creeks; a pioneer cabin you can stay in overnight, family and youth campgrounds, tree ID hike. A new office building and visitor center with restrooms.
And Steppe is considered one of Indiana's most "haunted" places. A film has been made of one person's experience (showings starting in the fall of 2019).

Tried some gold panning in creek on the north west area of the state forest. You have to get a permit to do so, all we did was call the office, gave them our names, address and email, they emailed our permits within a few minutes. There are no shovels, dredging or sluice boxes allowed. All we could use were our pans, which worked just fine. There is gold there, mostly flour but we did find a few smaller flakes. Most of the roads were well paved, it was a beautiful drive through.

Very very beautiful.Extremely large Forrest stayed one night no way could I have seen not even a portion of this.They have many different paths and sites.I did see a park area 2 or 3 camping areas.Clean and Undisturbed,tons & tons of different trees & plants.Great price for the camping $13 a night

No entrance fee is a plus for any forestry area. This is a great place not too far from Indy to enjoy picnics, hiking, biking and walking your pups. It’s more of a forestry area than a park. There are some picnic, camping, fishing holes and gold pannig areas (permit req) You won’t get the scenic overlooks like Brown County but there are far less people except during mushroom season. You might see transients passing through on their way to Bloomington. There are not many amenities so pack all you need. Lake Lemon is a short drive from the forestry and has a small beach and you can kayak there.
The trails are easy to moderate but some are steep. The new office/HQ almost looks complete. You can hunt here so have BLAZE Orange on during hunting season for safety.
Much of the park is viewed from county roads and picnic areas are easy to mis. It's only 24,000 acres so it’s not the largest forestry.
The Low Gap road Trail was a nice hike, 10 miles, and backpack camping is allowed with a free permit. Three Lakes trail is 10 miles and that’s our next hike.

If you're looking for something to do in the forestry you won't find it here. One tiny playground and a fire tower. Waste of time and fuel.

We were looking for a new place to explore and found this. Great drive today as the fall colors are starting to change. Roads could use some patching, but they don't appear to get too much use. Lots of cars at the trailheads, but we didn't see many people on the short trips we took. (Odd that with all the trails, we came across three groups hiking on the road!). Surprised at the number of campers today...not crowded, but many here in the primitive sites. Lots of decent picnic areas. Far fewer people here than further south, which is just fine. Lots of terrain changes on many of the trails. Not much here, so bring all needed supplies. Few lakes and ponds, but the topography explains that. Glad we discovered a new spot nearby where we can get away.
