Very peaceful. Bright blue sky, warmish, just the gentle noise of the river over small rocks in the narrows and ample chance to give the young dog some more swimming lessons. Car park almost empty on arrival and hard passed anyone even walking back. Several Dartmoor horse on the meadow and drinking from the river. Small cluster of tents upstream towards the bridge but so far little sign of life.

Buckland offers an excellent pub The Drake Manor that is comfortable and does good food. It also has a beer garden. From Buckland Monachorum there are a number of good walks perhaps the best being a visit to Double Waters where the Walkham meets the Tavy a most picturesque spot. Check out Www.walkingworld and Www.tavistock ramblers for self guided walks that you can download to your phone. To walk along the Walkham valley go down the hill from Horrabridge on the a386 and turn left into a large car park just before the bridge. With the river on your right set off along the foot path when you reach the next bridge walk over it and go left after 50m along another footpath and eventually you will reach Double Waters. Its a lovely walk.

We hired bicycles from the shop in Yelverton and spent a lovely afternoon cycling to Tavistock and back.

Most of the trackbed of a former railway from Plymouth through Yelverton to Tavistock has been turned into a 21-mile cycling and walking route called Drake's Trail, crossing the Walkham Valley on the way. A linked trail offers an alternative route which includes Buckland Monachorum, leaving the main trail near Yelverton and rejoining it few miles further north. I walked the section of main trail from Yelverton to Tavistock last July. This is pleasant but no better: it's bordered by trees most of the way, so views are limited, and the only points of any note are the 374-yard Grenofen Tunnel (reopened in 2013), the stone Magpie Viaduct, and the crossing of the River Walkham. When the railway was first built it crossed the Walkham on a magnificent timber viaduct designed by Brunel, but this was rebuilt in masonry by (around) the end of the 19th century, and sadly demolished after the railway closed. Today the trail crosses the valley on a purpose-built modern bridge (Gem Bridge) at a lower level than the original; all that remains from the railway era are the massive abutments rising above the path at each end of the bridge.

We parked at Bedford Bridge car park (free parking), which has a toilet block, and walked a circular walk to Grenofen Bridge and back. We started up a steep stony track beside the toilet block, which brought us up to the Drakes Trail (a disused railway track that is now a tarmac'd cycle way). We turned right when we reached it, and walked along to the new Gem Bridge over the River Walkham. We then followed the woodland track at the far end of the bridge down to Grenofen Bridge and over it to go up a long steep rough track to the edge of thge moorland at the top. We then turned left and followed the edge of the wood until we picked up the well-worn path back down to Bedford Bridge. A round walk of about 4 miles.

We like to take a short walk usually with the dog from the car park at Magpie Bridge downstream along the small path beside the fast flowing and attractive river. There are one or two spots where the dog can swim out into wide areas and retrieve sticks etc and higher up near the car park, entrance and lavatories, there is a largish flat area for picnics games barbecues etc. We have seen group swimming there too. Or you can walk in a loop up around the railway viaduct and then down to the river and back up. We often go on to the Leaping Salmon in Horrabridge for a pint and some food.
