One of my favourite places on Earth! The atmosphere, the animals, the landscapes, the starry nights... everything!
Park staff is absolutely great, flexible and nice. We had to change our accommodation as Nossob was inaccessible due to heavy rains and floods and staff helped us tremendously.

Absolutely stunning place.
Our plan was to enter thru Mata Mata very early and exit thru the same gate at the end of the day but the park authorities screwed that up for us.
When day visiting thru Mata Mata gate you have to exit the adjacent Namibia border and enter South Africa. This border post doesn’t open until 8am, and then closes at 4.30pm!!!!!
So, we got into the park at 8.30am just as all the big cat settle down to sleep, and were forced to leave at 4.20pm just as the cats begin to wake up. For this we had to pay the full day fee!!!!
For a park which is billed as Transfrontier, I think changes need to be made.

Last April I decided to visit the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park .despite being aware that visits to this park should be scheduled with a year in advance.
With this purpose and after an Internet search I decided to contact KALAHARI SAFARIS .
Lizmarie responded immediately with the possible itinerary and the corresponding proposal for a six day tour , which included accommodation in chalets, guide, transport in 4x4, game drives and meals.
The guide, Jakes, was very knowledgeable, patient, and provided tasty meals with great barbecues. He is also a gentleman!
We saw and photographed nice landscapes, lions, cheetahs, springboks, giraffes, gemsbok, wildebeest ,hartebeest, kudus, jackals, rodents, bat eared foxes, meerkats ,many birds, ostriches etc.
A memorable tour. We highly recommend.

We had an amazing experience at the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park with our two young kids! Stayed at Twee Rivieren as base and explored from there. Not as easy to spot animals as Kruger or Okavango, but the scenery alone is worth coming for. Go visit Khomani San 40 minutes away to learn more about the Khoisan people.

Main problem with this trip is that Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is that it is always fully booked a year in advance. I honestly set my alarm clock for 12h05 so I could wake up the minute the bookings opened so we could secure our spot.
The Kalagadi, with its impressive rolling red sand dunes is beautiful. The remoteness and sheer size of the Park is revitalising for the soul even in very dry conditions of this rugged desert wilderness.
There was a shop at Nossob and Twee Rivieren. Rooseterkoek was available daily as well as essentials like wine! The camp staff were very helpful. A nice feature was both camps had swimming pools. The camps only had power from 5am to 10pm.
Some of the roads were corrugated but we lowered our tyre pressure and it was completely passable with a normal 2x4. …
The distance between the camps takes a long time but why would you want to rush? We spent some time at the waterholes and were rewarded with a cheetah sighting. There were endless vistas, incredible sunsets and amazing game and bird sighting.
We loved this park because it was not over-commercialised. It was well worth the travel to get there and enjoy the uniqueness of the place.
If you like it rough and wild just go - you will not be disappointed!

It’s not easy getting a booking at Kgalagadi. This was our first time in the park and I booked exactly twelve months in advance. I didn’t know much about the park so decided on three nights on each of the main camps - Twee Rivieren, Mata Mata and Nossob. I also didn’t know that both Mata Mata and Nossob offered luxury perimeter accommodation so we were in the standard chalets. But what a great trip it was. Even though these are the “main camps” they are much smaller and more personal than those I. Kruger. Our accommodation is we clean and comfortable and fully equipped. The camp staff were lovely and the shops had all the basics we needed other than much in the way of fresh vegetables. But when you realise that Nossob is over 410 kms north of Upington their stock is still remarkable. A nice feature was all three camps had swimming pools.
And then the Kgalagadi experience! Endless vistas, gorgeous skies, amazing vegetation, incredible sunsets beautiful game and bird sightings.
The whole park seems well managed, picnic spots were lovely and the roads manageable on our all wheel drive SUV but I would say completely passable with a normal 2x4.
Can’t wait to return but next time will include some of the small unfenced camps in my Itinerary

Expecting heavily corrugated roads, the surface surprised on the upside. On several occasions we passed a vehicle towing a platform of tyres that seemed to improve the surface. A grader was working the dune road.
We stayed at Kalahari Tent, Mata-Mata, Nossop and Bitterpan camps. The staff were friendly and efficient and the accommodation spotlessly clean.

Words or more importantly my words cannot really do justice to this park, it is simply awesome in almost every aspect.
There are many reviews and blogs on the KNP, I will not try and compete with those. If you manage to book a few nights at one of the main camps either in a chalet or camping then you are in for a treat, if you manage to book one of the wilderness camps then you are in for a real treat. This park is not for everyone, you will hear complaints about the state of the roads which become very corrugated due to the ignorance of many visitors that fail to lower their tyre pressure, the park should actually make this mandatory and disallow entry to those that's do not follow through rules. We were fortunate enough to to spend 26 nights here in Aug 2022 our 4th visit since 2019. We have encountered the kind of sitings one only dreams about, we have had our land rover disabled by a striped grass mouse with a recovery fee in excess odlf 30000zar £1500 thankfully insured for rodent cover, but even through all of this we love this place.
Warning it takes a long time to get places and in winter I doubt you could manage to get from main gate to the northernmost wilderness camp Gaaragab. But then again why would you want too, this is a park for taking your time, the winter months can be ferociously cold and the summer months ridiculously hot with terrific thunder storms that can isolate parts of the park. A trip here takes serious planning, if planning a lengthy stay remember the nearest town and therefor chemist etc is Upington 253km from main gate. There are shops at the main camps stocking most essentials beer wine spirits cool drink and an array of food stuffs, frozen braai meats and some almost fresh veg and frozen bread.
Wildlife spotting is not easy at times and you can spend hours without seeing much at all, spending time at the waterholes can be very rewarding, you need to be patient and prepared.
Jeez that's already 1600 characters and not scratched the surface. If you like it rough and wild just go you will not be disappointed

Einfach irre!!

We had a very nice experience in KTP with a lot of sightings of birds of prey and big cats. The restaurant in Twee Rivieren is rather basic as are the shops at Nossob, MataMata and TR but all you need is there and if you order in time even roosterkoek is daily available. Roads are sometimes quite corrugated more specific close to the main camps where there is more traffic. Very often banking's have become pretty high due years of grading and blocking a free sight into the valley and this way blocking possible sightings too. There are in fact only 2 main roads to drive on connected by the upper and lower dune road so if you stay for a longer while you will have to drive the same roads many times without a chance of may variation. Night drives are a bit of disappointing since you stay mainly on the main roads you can drive yourself at daytime. At Nossob Thijs Burger is a great guide with a lot of interesting information about the park and its wildlife. The Bush camps of Bitterpan an Gharagab are very remoted and you need a 4x4 to access them. Main problem is to get bookings at KTP since mostly they are fully booked a year in advance especially the bush camps.

Hi. We are currently in South Africa and we are Americans with a current visitor visa, as well as very recent visas from all three countries involved. What concerns need we have about crossing over into Namibia again, and then back to continue on our way to Cape Town. Any border issues for back and forth Americans?
We find the Namibian border very efficient and they issue visas on arrival. Take cash to pay for your car insurance if travelling by car.

Hi
Can I buy the International Wild Card at the Twee Rivieren gate on arrival? I know that we used to and I just want to make sure before our trip. Thank you
I bought ours online before leaving. It was really easy and it was one less thing to deal with on the trip. Just be sure to print the purchase confirmation page. Our card never arrived but we used the printed confirmation instead.

We are thinking of visiting this park next January, will it be too hot at this time of the year. We would be driving up from Cape Town so suggested routes would also be useful.
It is very hot in Jan in the park, temperatures range from 30 degrees celsius to 48, however, this makes it the best time of the year to see the cats as they all come to the waterholes in the park so your sightings are excellent.
If you stay at the major camps, Twee Rivieren, Nossop and Mata Mata they all have swimming pools and this really makes it much easier to visit the park in the hot months. You need to be up early for your game drive and then around 10 head back to the camp and spend some time in the pool and then head out again at about 4. It will be well worth the heat.
In terms of routes from CT, the easiest is to drive up the N7 towards Van Rhynsdorp where you turn onto the R27 and go through Kenhardt to Keimoes and then take the N10 to Upingtom. From Upington it is about 260km to the park gate at Twee Rivieren.
You will need to book as quickly as possible and the chalets book up fast for that time of year.

would like to visit in december and stay near Mata Mata and travel to namibia
december ok?
can we rent a car in SA and travel to Namibia?
is a 2WD car ok?
thx
Hi, The answers below are all correct. Must agree 4 X 4 is better. One thing not mentioned, if you go in at twee rivieren let them know you are going out at Mata Mata, because they must stamp your passport, if you do not you will have to go back to twee rivieren and then back to Mata Mata to go out. Our last visit this happened to a dutch couple.
Is there a nearby airport to this Park? Do I have to fly to Johannesburg or Cape Town?
The answers are correct. Best option is to fly Cape Town, then Upington.
Would recommend a 4WD vehicle, though not necessity.
There is fuel at the park, both at Twee Rivieren and Mata Mata, but not sure about Nossob.
In the winter April till end off July the vegetation is low and you are able to see the game.
Big game such as leopard and lion are spotted often in early morning or late at night.
There is almost no rainfall , temperature in day time approx 16-21 degrees at night the temparature drop till freezing point, so bring warm clohting.
In summer August-March there are heavy thunderstorms and rainfall, the vegatation is more lush. There are also more insects (spiders, scorpions)
If you are going camping (travel with a 4x4 hilux) i think you better can travel in September, if you are staying in lodges i prefer the winter time ( june).
Notice that if you go to Kagalagadi TP, you better check the site for the pertrol station, its often in maintenance, you better fill up your tank 70 km before KTP.
If you enter at Two Rivers and leaving at the Namibian border take some time for border control.
Notice also that the KTP Botswana area you need to apply for a special permit and two jeep minimum.
If you have a week visiting Kgalagadi, what would be the best camp to stay for more than one night, especially when you want to have the best chances of seeing wildlife?
