Beware of scammers at Manuel Antonio Espadilla Beach! A man named Marco Alfonso stopped us, lied about parking, all we wanted is access the shops and then buy some souvenirs, he demanded $20 for beach chairs (which were not needed) and access to shops. He was aggressive and pushy, ruining our experience. At the end, a local warned us not to trust him. This is a public free beach—stay alert and don’t let people like him take advantage of you.

This beach was gorgeous and, further down the way, one of the less crowded beaches in Manuel Antonio National park. The beaches are a little rocky in some spots, but other than that, the water is clear and the sand is soft.

La Playa Espadilla Norte was a short bus ride from our hotel. The hotel offers shuttle at specific hours, however, there is a bus down the street that comes about every 10 to 15 minutes and it costs 380 Costa Rican colones. Both drop you off right at the beach. The beach is clean with gorgeous scenery. You can rent a cabana and chairs for $25. They give two boogie words to you for free. Surf lessons are also available for an hour for $45. There is also para sailing for about 15 minutes 120–140$. There are drinks available throughout the beach. These are offered by different companies we chose the one our Hotel had suggested Angelina. Going back to the hotel we decided to take the public bus not wait for the hotel shuttle to come.we had a great day.

We only spent 1/2 day at this beach. But we had the pleasure to rent our boards and chairs from Glen and Angelina Castro. This couple made our time at the beach great. We rented 4 chairs and shade for $20 with unlimited use of their buggy boards and we rented a surf board for $10. I thought it was great value. Perfect spot at the beach. The both of them very genuine and attentive people. Glen teaches lessons and I saw one of his classes and his student had a hard time getting up, but Glen gave him some tips and the person started getting up immediately. He looked like a great teacher.

We were too scammed into a parking fee. They locals were very aggressive. The beach was overly crowded. Huge jelly fish everywhere. After my daughter was caught in one, I when to the guys who sold us our parking spot and they laughed and told us to pee on it. They said the jelly fish are everywhere here. Keep wondering why no one else has warned us about this.

Very nice beach with a little strong waves but later in the afternoon it goes down.
What I also liked about this beach is that after having seen many beaches, it was the only one that had lifeguards and by the way, they were very efficient, always making sure that I was swimming where I was safe. Very attentive with the children...
There are many activities available and it is true that there are vendors, people who offer you drinks, fresh coconuts, etc., but for me it was not excessive.
On the other side of the street there are supermarkets, restaurants (I recommend the Baldish Fresh restaurant, very delicious food)
and shops.
Chairs and umbrellas are rented at a very reasonable price (3000 colones per day).
The only thing that disappointed me was seeing that people profit from leasing horses. Costa Rica being the most careful country for the well-being of animals surprised me. Even so, Espadilla Beach remains for me one of the best in Costa Rica.

The problem is not the beach, which has wonderful characteristics, not at the level of those in the park but very interesting in terms of its size. The greatest caution that must be taken is with the scam of a group set up next to the park, that place is the first exit to the beach. There is a group of scammers (led by a woman) who charge twice as much as everyone else on the beach, additionally they are next to a surfing group, all aggressive and rude. The rest of the beach is great. A drawbacks to take into account. The police have an arrangement with these people and therefore they are left to their fate. My recommendation, try to be in the center of the beach, there you will find very respectful people. Don't trust the prices, they charge more, the normal cost is 10 to 12 dollars for umbrellas with two lounge chairs, it can be up to 15, if they ask for more, look for another one. The drawback of Manuel Antonio is that it is a tourist area but it does not have a protection mechanism for tourists. Without a doubt, the park is wonderful and that place does have all the protection, it has an entrance fee but it is definitely worth it.

We were staying at the Gaia Hotel and Reserve who run a shuttle down to the beach so we decided to leave our rental car behind.
I had read about all the scams and pressure selling on the beach, but we were dropped by the big sign giving advice on riptides and met Peluca. The man is an absolute gentleman and we were given beds and a parasol for $10 USD. He continued to check on us, have chats and go and get us a bucket of beers.
There are people walking around trying to earn a living but none of them were rude or aggressive when politely refused.
The water can be rough for children and those not confident in the water but from our perspective, we had a great time. We also saw a sloth in a tree near the car park and a toucan.

Beware of parking scams and aggressive locals! Locals make you pay ‘security fee’ for parking your on the beach where it is fee. They charge 12000 colon. If you don’t pay they damage your can and they get aggressive. I was hit by a stone on the head. They are so called selling tourist trips and help you with parking the car. All the tourist selling locals at that beach are in on it. Please do yourself a favour and don’t go here. This is definitely not Pura Vida!

Beautiful beach , but too many vendors. You cannot sit down and relax peacefully without someone trying to sell you something. My little girl felt very uncomfortable at some points with strangers talking in her face and trying to touch her hair.

It’s always a challenge. You need to get there early. There a people “guide” the parking for fees, but it is supposedly to be free.

Hi TA, We saw the guys with the horses on the beach...Can you take shirt rides on them, does anyone know the cost?

I only saw one party hiring for a horse ride on the beach. As for the cost, I do not know. Like most rentals there the charge is in US dollars.
