Seriously had an incredible experience, ended up become best friends with an all blue macaw. Patrick has a remarkable mind and a wonderful heart for all animals. Talking to him was a blast and we all learned so much. Got to see and hold so many beautiful, rare birds. 100% would recommend stopping by if you are in the area, best you reach out to him on facebook messenger.

A peaceful, beautiful place, many animals, birds are very special, Patrick is a person with great love for animals, a 4x4 vehicle is required.

Had an absolutely amazing time getting to know Patrick and visiting his stunning sanctuary. His knowledge and love for his animals is abundant. If you have the opportunity to make your way out to Ave Azul you absolutely should. It's quite the adventure. Thank you for everything Patrick and hope to see you again soon!

The property is beautiful and very wild. We met Patrick and took a tour of the birds, snakes, and insect/ fossil collections he had at the property. Most importantly, the talks we had with Patrick about his past experiences of world travel aswell as his encounters with wildlife he has had in Costa Rica gives you a completely different perspective of the country and teaches you the respect that should be given to all wildlife in the area. Truly an interesting, fun, and very educational experience.

Patrick was sooo knowledgeable about all things of the Osa Penninsula as well as unique animals throughout the world. The Macaws were stunning, though it was breeding season and we couldn’t see all of them. Even so, my 10 year old grandson was able to pet one of the Macaws who was not segregated for breeding. Quite the memory maker! Patrick has a really in depth museum to visit as well, that includes so many insects and animals from different areas of the globe. My grandson was fascinated, as were we. Truly a unique, informative visit—save time to go hiking on his gorgeous property tucked way back in the Osa. Beautiful.

The place is truly amazing, it is only surpassed by the man taking care if it all.
Patrick is an amazing man, the knowledge of plants, animals, right down to all the little creepy crawly cool insects is truly amazing.
I feel blessed to have known Patrick and his late wife many years now, i have been there many times and have brought many of friends to share this special place, and person. I can barely wait till next time I get to be back there visiting and taking it all in.
A huge must if down in that area, or even make it the main purpose to be down on the Osa!

One of the highlights of our visit to the Osa. I would be hard pressed to say I had met a more interesting man!! Such a spot, with an amazing host with encyclopedic knowledge of the fauna of the area and further afield. Only regret is we were unable to stay long enough. If back in the area I would definitely spend the entire day. Not a place to be missed if you are anywhere near the area... worth going out of your way to visit!! Patrick is off the grid on a beautiful 250 acres in the rainforest. He has no television or internet and only goes to town twice a month so if you send a message he may not answer for awhile. The dry season is when the birds are on eggs or raising habit birds so you can’t walk around the aviaries. He does bring up birds to his patio though. He has a small museum as well. He has been the director of several zoos and is a wealth of information. We had a great three hour conversation with him learning about his life, the home he has built there and his conservation efforts. The rough road is worth the journey and if you do plan a visit, he would love a box of grits! LOL You will definitely need a 4x4 vehicle to get there. There’s a shortcut called the Miramar. It’s an unmarked road but it bypasses all the tiny bridges. You still need 4 wheel drive and it’s not for the faint of heart. We took it back and it saved 30 minutes. However if you take the main rough road in, there’s an amazing beach pull off on Playa Tamales with a great view and hermit crabs.

Fantastic experience. It's a rough ride to get there, but well worth it. Patrick gave us a tour of the sanctuary, along with a lot of great information about the animal and plantlife in the area. His dedication to the animals is inspiring.
