Thanks for visiting! We're glad you were able to enjoy our educational exhibit, it's a great way to learn more about South Dakota, Brown County and Aberdeen history! The Hatterscheidt Wildlife Gallery has an informative narrative/handout available in the exhibit that explains that Mr. Fred Hatterscheidt, along with two other local gentlemen, donated the building to Brown County for use as a museum in 1969. Mr. Hatterscheidt was a local businessman who did well in real estate in the first half of the 20th century and these are his specimens. While this may be of interest to locals, we feel that the wildlife display is a great way to educate visitors on the wider world of the animal kingdom, not just Great Plains bison, pheasants and prairie dogs. The Dacotah Prairie Museum is supported by the local county government and its our mission to be good stewards of the taxpayers' funds and continue to offer this free attraction to everyone. We hope to see you again in the future as our exhibits change on a regular basis with traveling STEM exhibits, local artists shows, and historical displays utilizing some of our 40,000+ artifacts.
