Authentic Kyoto-made souvenirs!
2018年7月 • 單獨旅行
Happened across this shop while wandering around the residential areas by the Imperial Palace in Kyoto and found the perfect souvenir chopsticks to take home at this small shop! The owner was lovely and so helpful. It was so nice to know I was buying work by local artisans instead of a major manufacturer. I'm so bummed I didn't have the time to take a class, but I will definitely make an online reservation on my next trip to Kyoto :)

Traditional Makie at Inui Shikki
2016年10月 • 夫妻情侶
This was a really great experience! My fiancé and I really enjoyed the activity. The reservations were easily made via email and I received a response in less than 24 hrs. The website is in English and easy to navigate. The shop is obscure but is on Takeyamachi (Google says Takeyacho). Heading South from the palace turn left onto Takeyamachi and walk a little past the small park on your right. The map image I included has a star showing where the shop is for reference. The closest station is Marutamachi. Another reviewer has a picture of the shop front.

Chie-san is the instructor and she was very friendly and welcoming. Her English is limited but she is helpful and tries to communicate; it's definitely enough to get through the lesson with the English manual. You can also use the Google translate app to help you out in a pinch. Chie was very attentive but not bossy, gave us pointers, and helped touch up our pieces. My fiancé used her pre-made tracings to make his tray and I free handed mine; you can choose what you prefer.

The store front is very tidy and she has displayed for sale many works by herself and two other artists. They run the shop collaboratively and also have items displayed at the Kyoto Traditional Craft Museum (Fureaikan). Chief explained that she received schooling for her craft and has been doing this art for about 40 years! I highly recommend this activity if you're looking for a unique experience off the main tourist tracks and want a special souvenir.

Wonderful cultural hands-on experience!

My friend and I wanted to experience the cultural side of Kyoto without it getting too touristy. A makie introduction class was a perfect way to talk to one of the locals (the teacher was really kind and helpful!) and to try and get an understanding of a traditional japanese practise - plus it's a great souviner or perhaps a gift to someone!
I would recommend this experience to anyone anytime!

My daughter and I are traveling Japan just to learn various crafts. We really enjoyed this class. I am not artistic by any means and people even laugh at my stick figures but I am very happy with the plate I made. It is well worth your time.

Maki-e (painting on laquer) workshop
2016年3月 • 單獨旅行
The teacher was extremely kind and nice, and even if her English is extremely limited we managed to get everything sorted out without problems.

The lab is behind a small shop where you can find professionaly done items with the same technique (actually, in the workshop you will experience a simplified form of the whole process, streamlined and without having to deal with nasty chemicals).

Never tried before (even if I have some experience with ShoDo) and it is much harder than I expected. Be careful to paint lines as fine as humanly possible for best effect.

Amazing Cultural Experience
2013年8月 • 家庭式
My daughters were delighted to make their own souvenirs from Kyoto. Ms. Inui was very knowledgeable, kind, and accommodating. She patiently showed our daughters how to make beautiful and precious art work on lacquer pieces, using gold powder and mother of pearl. We brought back a piece of Kyoto with us. The experience was fantastic and memorable.

Unique, make your own gift!

My wife and I spent an excellent time creating our own lacquer designs, which we then took home with us. The process was interesting and the results made perfect gifts for friends and family.

Besides artistic merit, this is an excellent way to spent a couple of hours out of the rain or heat in central Kyoto.

Wonderful cultural experience. Making my own souvenir and enjoy it every day after the trip.

Conveniently located and affordable price to enjoy an experience to understand and enjoy Japanese arts and crafts. Made my own beautiful Japanese lacquer design that I could share with my family after the trip. Run by a small family business which enables personable instructions. One of the best discoveries in Japan.
