There was a statue of Yuji Furuseki, the great composer born in Fukushima, just outside the east exit of JR Fukushima Station. A little further away from the station was the standing statue of Basho and Sora on a journey.
Beneath the statue on which they stand is an instruction that reads, "Matsuo Basho, accompanied by his disciple Sora, left Edo on May 16, 1689 and spent the night here in Fukushima on May 1, 1689."

The statue of Basho and Sora at the east exit of Fukushima Station. It is said that Basho spent a night here in Fukushima during his journey on the Oku-no-Hosomichi, so this is a place closely related to Basho.

江戸を離れて随分と遠くまで来たものですね。これから平泉や山寺まで足を延ばすと考えたら、当時の人は随分と健脚だと思います。JR福島駅東口の広場に有ります。

東口駅前広場の古関裕而像の脇を通り道路側、駅前通り（先はレンガ通り）に渡る前にあります。芭蕉、曽良は福島で一夜を過ごしたので、奥の細道３００年を記念して建立したそうです。東口駅前広場でどこに建っているか探しました。左側のバスのりばに行ったり、右側のタクシーのりば方面に右往左往しましたが、ほぼ真ん中にありました。

山寺には、入山口に同じく芭蕉と曾良の旅姿像があるので実際に上までお参りして下山後に再度この旅姿像を見れば感動も増すと思います。また、下山後の名物たまこんにゃくの味は最高ですね。
