Now with mostly local tourists this is a great place to stroll. Some good restaurants abs the souvenir shops are actually pretty good, I’m seldom to visit those but…
The view of the busy fishing harbour and all the tenders with the simple rope ferries is amazing. Grab a beer and enjoy the view!
But a couple of streets back is much more interesting when it comes to shops and local ambiance

...that you will arrive at when disembarking from the ferry. There is plenty to see here but I think the charms of this island are to be found elsewhere in its much quieter parts.

For those making a day visit to Cheung Chau by ferry, you will arrive at the pier located along Pak She Praya Road. This is a lively area with convenience stores, McD, Starbucks, a few souvenir, dried seafood & sundries and other retail shops. You'll also find a handful of cafes and local seafood restaurants where you can have a drink or meal while watching the world go by.

The harbour is quite photogenic along Pak She Praya, as are some of the traditional Chinese shops that you will walk by that make for interesting photos. In the early morning, there is little foot traffic here but my midday, the street is rather packed with pedestrians and bikers.

If you are visiting Cheung Chau for hiking, most head to the left after exiting the ferry and visit the north side of the island first. If you prefer to start with the south end, just turn right instead. Go straight through the village area upon arrival if you want to go straight for the main beach on the east side of Cheung Chau.

Cheung Chau has a wonderful old-world fishing village atmosphere, making it one of my favourite day trips. Once you get off the ferry, the first thing to do is to stroll along Pak She Praya, the main road running along the harbour. This is the best starting point for exploring the island. No cars are allowed on Cheung Chau so the road is more like a promenade with pedestrians and bikes only.

On one side you have the water and leafy trees and on the other side, a string of shops and local seafood restaurants. The small harbour is filled with fishing boats, many of which are tethered together to make a sort of floating fishing community. It’s a colourful scene.

We wandered along, intrigued by the rows of fish, shrimp and cuttlefish spread out on large woven trays, drying in sun. We stopped to look at the tanks of fresh fish, crabs, razor clams and other more curious looking creatures from the deep (I’m still wondering what that slug-like looking thing was) and we bought giant frozen slices of watermelon on a stick, bigger than my head, and tried to eat them before they dripped down our arms.

The 2 best things to do along Pak She Praya Rd are visiting the Pak Tai temple and lunch at one of the local seafood restaurants.

If you turn left from the ferry, you’ll be spoilt for choice for restaurants. My favourite one is probably The New Baccarat but I also recently tried Hong Lok Seafood which was good too (see separate reviews).

The temple is right next to The New Baccarat. Entry is free. It is the biggest Pak Tai temple in Hong Kong, with 4 lions guarding the entrance, coils of smoky incense and statues of gods with pleasingly dramatic names like ‘Supreme Emperor of the Dark Heaven’, "Thousand Miles Eye" and "Favourable Wind Ear".

Once you have strolled the length of Pak She Praya Rd, you can start to explore some of the narrow backstreets or head over to the beach which is about 10 minutes away, on the opposite side of the island.

Pak She Praya Road is a lively area on the popular island of Cheung Chau where you find a nice market scene with local shops, restaurants with alfresco dining as well as a notable fishing fleet that berths in the bay area around the main pier. It is an attractive and enjoyable place to stroll and see day-to-day life of those who live on Cheung Chau.

If you walk up Pak She Praya Road there are numerous spots for good photos of the fishing fleet. There are also park benches on both sides of the pier structure, if you want to take a seat and enjoy the lively seaside environs found along this active road.
