Can we walk inside the citadel without going into the museum? Or do we need a combination ticket? I am asking because my kids won't have a long attention span for the exhibits. we are planning to buy tickets for the Light show. Thank you!

Yes you can. The museum is on the main level and you can let the kids explore around the citadel while an adult is visiting the museum.
Cuanto cuesta el boleto?

te recomiendo comprar el combo que incluye el museo y el espectaculo de luz y sonido, eso esta alrededor de 20 dolares
We are going to Jerusalem next month and have a day off from the tour. We want to see the Tower of David and an evening sound and light show tour is offered - will this give us a good visit to the facility or would we be ahead to book a day visit? Also, can you recommend any non mainstream areas to visit on a day off? ( we are going with Educational Opportunities tours )

About the museum, we were not able to see much of it at night. You can see the basic structure of the tower but that's about it. I went the next day for an in depth visit. It was a while ago, but I think I remember that the museum as well went through the history but much more in depth. I enjoyed it as well. I also spent extra money on the audio tour, but it was too long and spoke too much about each point, that I didn't listen to it. I wouldn't buy it again in the future, unless you're really interested in every detail of the history. I was with some friends and we enjoyed reading the exhibits. It was enough for us. I also think that we received a discounted price (maybe 70 NIS) for the two things together. I would definitely recommend doing both things and it's a pretty cheap attraction.
The tower of david is right across from mamilla so we ate dinner and then walked across the street for the show. You may want to do that.
I also enjoyed a tour of the knesset (parliament). I think it was free. I found it very interesting and informative. Also, it is in the same area and very easy to get to by public transportation. You have to check, it's only open to tours on certain days when they are not in session...
Another close by thing we did was bike riding in what's called "The First Station." It's an old train station converted into an attraction. they paved the track and they have bikes there and little shops, restaurants, etc. It's also nice to walk around.
I don't know if you're interested, but I also really enjoyed the temple institute. It's website is in Hebrew (temple org il). (I added spaces and took away the dots between the words in the link because trip advisor does not allow links.) It's literally right near the tower of david museum, just a few block away. They spent a lot of money and did great research to recreate the objects and utensils used in the Temple. They have tours offered in English. I was amazed at the details and information. It's a small place, but I learned so much and really felt that it was worth my time.
I hope these ideas are helpful and that you have a great trip!
