We took the Char Dham Yatra from 16th to 20th May 2022 by Helicopter. We used Streak Heli Services. From Dehradun we left early morning via Sahastradhara helipad. Reached Kharsali village in about 20min. Freshened up at a lodge which was very basic. There most of the accommodations at Kharsali village are basic, though they serve hot food and have hot water in bathrooms.
Then we started the near about 3 hr uphill journey to the Yamunotri Temple. A bit of advice here. The trek is extremely difficult as it is a long one --- 6km, of which 3km are very steep. Oxygen levels are low which makes walking difficult, more so at an inclined path. Better to choose Palki which is the best option. There are also horses, but they are not at all comfortable, very dangerous while descending and a bad choice for persons with back problems.
On reaching the temple and all along the road, the crowd was thick. Hot springs re there at adjacent area. The Pujari arranged a puja for us in the Temple at the Initiation site of river Yamuna which is a hot spring. There is another cold water flow of Yamuna that comes from snow melting. After Puja darshan of Goddess Ganga, Yamuna followed by prasad.
Then we started our downward travel again by Palki. Palkis travel faster downhill as the horses are afraid looking at steep descents. There is a picturesque spot in this route to sit on the rocks and click photos with the Yamuna flowing by.
After night stay at the lodge, early next morning we freshened up, had breakfast and left for the helipad close by for the travel to Gangotri.

We did the trek to the temple. It's a belief that can take you places. While September is a good time, we visited in May which was saw a huge crowd. The trek can get tough with pony, palki and pithu moving up and down give least priority to people trekking. Once you reach the top, you will be relieved of tiredness where ever you step your foot. The hot spring is not something that can be used by everyone. The place definitely requires better upkeep. Not recommended to spend much time at the top as the climate changes and can cause you to get stuck up.

We started from our hotel on Barkot - Yamunotri road at 6.30 am. It was a 36 kms drive and took us close to 3 hours to reach Janki Chhatti, the starting point for our ascend to Yamunotri temple. The roads were not in good condition due to heavy rains that took place a week ago. It is very difficult trek to the temple from this place and takes 2 1/2 to 3 hours. We reached the temple quarter past 12 noon. I choose to trek which is for 6 kms up and 6 kms down. Due to Covid, Tapt kund was not open for devotees. We got hold of a priest and performed puja at the temple and had very good darshan. It is advised to avail services of such people. The temple was open throughout the day for devotees.
The temple is dedicated to Goddess Yamunaji and the 1st of the 4 dhams in Uttarakhand to be visited. The temple is at a height of approx 3,400 meters from sea level. There was not much crowd due to Covid and also as the period of our visit was few days before the closure of temple. It took us little above an hour to see the temple and perform puja and have the darshan.
You may hire palanquin or pony for going to the temple. I hired two palanquins for my wife and her mother and each one charged INR 5,000 for return journey. The charges for pony was INR 1,000. These prices are always negotiable as they keep changing according to the season.
It was a very great experience to be there and very divine place and view to the temple are just mesmerising.

We went in Nov 2020, started to trek from Jankichatti. Though the kms displayed is 5kms, but in total its a trek of almost 19kms both sides. The view wile trekking is great but in a certain point you will the route, as you hvave to enter the forest and uphill trek. Its better to ask the local for routes, to avoid getting missed.
The temple is good and has hot springs, food availability is not much. But, you can get biscuits and Maggie, chai. We could see snow on the mountains and river alongisde.

The climb to Maa Yamnotri temple is tough to begin with because you are sharing the narrow pathway with other yatris, horses, mules & palkis..

Our entire climb up & down from the temple was riddled with rain which made it a little more difficult & colder than usual. But the best part of the yatra is the gorgeous view and beauty literally everywhere..

The temple is not managed properly though, we were lucky to get darshan as we went during the off season. It was a mess anyways.

Best to start early morning and return by late afternoon, plenty of food available on the way, carry water bottles & avoid using plastic as much as possible. Jai Mata Di.

Yamunotri temple belongs to Devi Yamuma, sister of Lord Yamraj. The temple is one of the four dham temples in Uttrakhand. One has to walk 6 kms to reach the hilltop were the temple is situated. The walk is fairly steep. Senior citizens can take a palki or a pony. We took pony for our parents. There is a natural hot water spring at the top were one can take bath before going to the temple. Hygiene level at the pond is alright. Must visit temple.

its a nice place to visit with family or friends, amazing secinic vows of snow covered himalaya and frozen waterfalls. Don't forget to visit a glecier on the river, the way from hanuman temple go upward and walk towards police chowki and then the glecier is on the river which is flowing in front of you. If you are adventure lover and good stamina then you can also visit the saprishi kund the origin of yamuna, its an altitude of 4200 mtrs from see level. Nice view of the valley and you can see Manny types of wild animals. Its a wonderful opportunity for those guys who want to feel snow and glecier. Its really wonderful movement when you see the glecier in front of you and feel yourself on the top of the hill, you can see the all hills are lower then you because you are on that hight where all hills are smaller,

Yamunotri is the river also known as Godess in India. This originates from Yamunotri and then purify the people for many states like Uttrakhand, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh etc. To reach the Yamunotri temple, you'll have to do a trek (in real words, hiking) for approx. 6 KMs. The views are awesome and amazing and can't be missed. Yamunotri also included Char Dham of Uttrakhand. Th environment is quite peacefully and you'll always feel the low temperature with cold breezer.

A must visit for pure traveller and for anyone who believe in God.

Normally Char Dham yatra starts from here this is first. Its a 6 km trek up. Horses, palkhis, Peethus available plenty. Its also smallest of yatra spaces, very narrow path, and closed by yamuna valley on a side. Its not as open and wide as Gangotri, Kedarnath or Badrinath. Kedarnath is also closed at top on all sides unless you trek beyond. Yamunotri has a well laid path like Vaishnodevi with enough sitting places and tea snack counters. So trek is relaxed. Even at slowest speed you can reach up by 4 hours, return trek takes 2 hours down max. BUT its so narrow a path it gets overcrowded and congested very fast with walkers, horses and palkhis all fighting for space barely wide to accommodate 3-4 people. They push you a lot. On top is Yamuna Maa temple, hot water kund to bath. Also a Hot water spring where they boil Prasad rice. The temple base was damaged in 2013 floods but miraculously it still stands.

You need decent walking shoes, a stick for support easily rented in market below at Rs 20 per. Thats all. The trek is steep and is a good testing workout of you intend to trek Kedranath and Vasudhara falls at Badrinath or Gamngotri-Gaumukh. In standard family Char Dham Gaumukh is not possible. The 15 kms road leading to Yamunotri through half a dozen 'Chattis' [villages] is also narrow. So early morning start is recommended to avoid a horrible traffic jam. There should be some regulation of how many people go up here at a time because this one is the most harrowing place of all 4 Dhams. Since the valley is fully narrow except bus stand and market area at top yatris stay spread out in these Chattis if in package tour. So traffic is bad.

The trail is carved out of rock so those riding horse or Palkhi should be alert at all times. Looking at valley and not paying attention to bends having sharp rock cuts overhead is fatal and can split your head very badly if not watchful. So riding up watch that left side rock as crowd rush can push you into one fatally. There is Govt doctor clinic at top near temple for emergency or oxygen supply for people who may find sudden altitude change problematic. Trek is steep last 2 kms test endurance. Just after Bhairav Mandir at 4 kms. This stretch has a lot of winding steep stairs that makes it hard. Steps are always taxing than natural trails or paths. Last 0.5 kms to temple is easy downward road. So you have a fight of 5.5 kms max. Nothing will power and love for nature cannot manage though. If you have ambitions to trek Kedarnath in full Yatra, this exercise is a must.

One more thing it is said one cannot bath in Yamunotri alone, but it has some ritual karma for a brother and sister to do holy dip together. I do not know why this belief exists. If you have family, you can take kids above 8 years for yatra but have adequate thermal wear warm clothes. Avoid having local water give them packed Mineral water to avoid infections in sudden extreme climate and water change. Sickness is last thing among kids you need as viral infections, gastric, constipation can be issues. And waterproof jackets a must because rains usually are a norm now since 2013 floods changed weather pattern. These days afternoons get sudden icy rains or showers.

Watch out for the razor sharp rock cuts on way up on left side if on a horse or Palkhi. Safety of head is paramount. On way down if on a horse pray the horse does not slip. because its a long way down in rocks. Walking is best if you ask me.
