Maria Annunziata Antonello da Messina. Fascinating canvas!!! For the sake of this masterpiece, I want to come back here again and again.

Palermo is stunning, I was truly struck by everything you can admire, a real feast for the eyes.
Unfortunately, I was equally disconcerted by the rubbish you find in every corner: overflowing bins, bins that are never emptied, etc., etc.
One last thing: I wanted to point out a guy who wanders around Piazza dell'Indipendenza convincing tourists to go to Monreale with his car at a cost of €40, giving a whole series of absolutely false excuses.
Go there by bus.

Can't say enough about this small, off-the-beaten path museum in Palermo ... numerous treasures within including the "Annunziata" masterpiece from the high renaissance. How this painting is not better known amongst other pieces from the same era is beyond my comprehension. Well worth the time to visit this museum which, at the time we visited, was in the process of being renovated.

It is an interesting museum where you can admire works of art in both sculpture and painting. In my opinion, it should be modernized a little to make it more attractive for people who are curious and not just for lovers of painting or sculpture. Furthermore, the opening hours should be reviewed... closing on Sunday afternoons I find absurd.

I decided to visit mainly because I was extremely attracted by the famous fifteenth-century fresco of "The Triumph of Death" (author unknown).
The work is definitely fascinating and intriguing, however, despite a few other interesting works, I found the visit to the museum below expectations.
The employee was kind and knowledgeable and provided me with a detailed explanation of the work.
Full ticket €9 considering everything a bit expensive.

Highly recommended visit. The guide present at the palace, a very kind Lo Cicero, enlightened us on the various works present in the rooms, making us appreciate them more. A thousand thanks

The museum is not very easy to visit, a little too disorganized...
Don't miss the splendid Annunziata by Antonello da Messina and the beautiful bust of Eleonora da Aragona

On December 22, 2023, my wife and I wanted to visit the Regional Gallery of Sicily "Palazzo Abatellis". We interrupted the visit after two rooms when we realized that we were faced with a new missed opportunity; to a museum made by specialists for specialists, without much consideration of possible visitors.

The labels of the individual objects are in 12 point or 14 point size. To read them you have to be very close, which is not easy in the presence of other people. There are no tables or other devices that contextualize the objects presented. We haven't even seen an introduction explaining what the museum collection consists of. We were only offered laminated pages, one per room, deformed from use and of very dubious hygiene. In any case, these pages contain no more than three lines per exposed object.

All over the world, museums have made very important progress in recent decades. Today a museum is above all an opportunity to learn something about a certain theme or a certain period in a couple of hours thanks to the objects on display. This occurs through a selection of what is displayed and its highlighting through explanatory tables, indications on the role and nature of the objects on display and, often, short videos of a few minutes (also useful as an opportunity for rest when they are presented in places with some benches).

And you don't have to go very far to find a well-made museum, designed according to modern criteria. The Antonino Salinas regional archaeological museum in Palermo is an excellent example. It also contains an excellent bookshop with a vast selection of interesting works on Sicily (the visit to this museum cost us 72 euros worth of books). The Salinas museum depends on the same body responsible for the Palazzo Abatellis museum!

Where the visit to the Palazzo Abatellis museum got really irritating is when a lady who works in the museum told us that it would not be possible to replace the ridiculous tiny labels. These would have been foreseen by Carlo Scarpa and everything that this luminary did in the museum would be under protection and unchangeable. If this were true, it would be proven proof of a job done by specialists only for other specialists with a manifest contempt for visitors and for those who pay the taxes used to finance museums.

I think that many people may have an interest in the works exhibited in the Palazzo Abatellis museum. But I believe that the number of people interested in a concrete example of the museum technique of the sixties of the last century is very low.

I really appreciate the initiative of the former culture minister Franceschini to ensure that museum directors, in addition to being experts in the subject, also have managerial skills. The results are being seen in a visible improvement of many museums. But this effort evidently arrived in Palermo in a different way. The Antonino Salinas museum is an excellent example of this while the Palazzo Abatellis does not yet seem to have been touched by this current of renewal.

The ancient Abatellis palace suffered several damages during the Second World War, the project for its transformation into a museum is by Carlo Scarpa, one of the most famous "space organizers" of the last century. The exhibition in this case is almost more important than the exposed, with a sublime use of the spaces. The problem is that since the exhibition itself has become a work of art, it has become unchangeable, undergoing an evolution in safety regulations and unable to expand.

Palace and collection worth the visit, with many buts. Scarpa's restoration suffers from subsequent insertions in poor taste. The staff seem listless, constantly on their cell phones and don't try to give half an indication (or a greeting) to engage. A real disappointment considering that it is a place not to be missed
