Small and particular church located in the historic center of Mantua, in the central Piazza Erbe. Built in the 11th century, the architectural style is Romanesque. I confirm it is not possible to go upstairs.

Small but pretty church in Piazza delle Erbe. Considering that entry is free, why not visit it?

Built in the 11th century, it is one of the oldest religious buildings in Mantua. In reality, the monoptero-peripteral structure and its positioning at a lower level of about 150 cm from that of the adjacent Piazza Erbe, in addition to the existence of two columns and other stone construction details, suggest that the church was built by recovering or reconstructing an earlier Roman building, dating to the 4th century, probably a temple, or a tholos tomb.
There is an atmosphere of times gone by. Too bad for the presence of a modern style crucifix which, in my opinion, fits "like cabbage for a snack".
For people in wheelchairs, two slides have been provided on the sides of the staircase leading to the building level and a ramp has been installed at the entrance.

It is the oldest church in the city. Inspired by the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem, it was built in the 11th century in Romanesque style. Very small and circular in shape, hence the name, it is surprising for its beauty internally, although many of the frescoes have unfortunately been lost. Entrance is free.

It is a very beautiful chapel. It really seems to have gone back over time precisely because this chapel is made of exposed stone with frescoes and is a bit very narrow.
It is very beautiful and excellent for tourists who want to explore places of worship.

The Rotonda di San Lorenzo is a 1,000-year-old church that is wonderfully different because it is completely round... and that's really great because it sets it apart from other church buildings.
Inside it has interesting arches like those found on Roman viaducts, which also run in a circle from floor to ceiling.

Presumably built in 1083, the Rotonda di S. Lorenzo is one of the oldest places of worship in the city, located on a basement level in the Piazza delle Erbe complex. The very fact that it lies on a slope suggests that it was built on a previous structure from the Roman era, whether a temple or a tomb.
Over time the building deteriorated and became degraded, before being deconsecrated and then used as a warehouse within the then Jewish ghetto, only to be recovered and renovated at the beginning of the 20th century.
The structure is built according to the canons of the Romanesque style, has a circular plan with a semicircular apse with arches and columns, surmounted by a frescoed upper gallery. On the external circumference we find columns corresponding to the internal ones, set in the brick wall.
At the entrance we find an inscription to Matilde of Canossa from 1081, of whom, according to tradition, the Rotunda was commissioned.
Worth giving it a fair but brief visit.

The oldest church in Mantua.

Built in the image of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem around the year 1000, apparently commissioned by Matilda of Canossa.

With its characteristic "round" shape, it has a single-plan interior with eight columns.

It deserves an extra vote for the story it brings with it.

Very nice. A medieval church, recovered (for years it was part of private homes and used as a warehouse). To be seen

The Rotonda di San Lorenzo is one of the oldest churches in Mantua; erected in the 11th century at the behest of Matilda of Canossa who wanted to recall the Anastasis of Jerusalem, the Rotunda built around the Holy Sepulchre, and create an ideal connection with the relic of the Blood of Christ, kept for centuries in Mantua and still preserved today in the crypt of the Basilica of Sant'Andrea. Due to the type of construction, it was certainly built on a pre-existing Roman building (temple or tholos tomb). Over the centuries it has undergone almost radical transformations. Today it is a fine example of Romanesque art. The circular shape is certainly unique and catches the eye
