A sacred and wonderful place: a gift from the Lord in the heart of Rome to pray and contemplate the Holy Virgin. Given the history and the exclusive place where this Marian sanctuary was built, we can only recommend all Roman citizens, Italians and tourists to visit the sanctuary. Saint Mary "causa nostrae laetitiae"

Magical. A tiny chapel – said to be the smallest in Rome -- constructed in the 19th century to house a venerated image of the Madonna. Legend has it that the eyes of the Madonna have moved, or wept. The lovely and ornate little chapel, well worth a visit, dates from 1851. It's a tiny little jewel, very beautiful and special.

It is considered the smallest church in Rome.
Located at the end of a narrow alley, it was built in 1851 and its construction is linked to a miraculous event.
Traditions says that in 1796 an image on a big maiolica tile of the Virgin Mary painted in 1690 by Domenico Maria Muratori, a Caracci pupil, under an arch in a very narrow lane behind Palazzo Muti, moved her eyes
and cried during the French invasion of 1796.
The icon had been commissioned by a Roman noblewoman, who lived at the palace in the neighborhood, near the narrow alleyway ('Vicolo dell'Archetto' in Italian), between Via San Marcello and via dell'Archetto, in the Trevi district.
From that moment on, the image became an object of veneration and great devotion.
It was placed in a small aedicule on the site, under the arch of the alley, to be honored.
It was replaced in 1859 by a church, designed by Virginio Vespignani, in a purist Neo-Classical style.
The sponsors, the Savorelli Papazzurri family, the descendants of the original patron of the icon, wanted to build the small place of worship.
The solemn inauguration took place on May 31, 1851, as the plaque above the entrance recalls.
It is not a chapel it is a "real' devotional church, a gem of neo-classical architecture, rich in precious marbles.
The interior has a Latin cross shape with a gilded stucco coffered ceiling and dome.
On the altar is the image of "Maria Santissima Causa Nostrae Letitiae" ( which means " Hail Mary, origin of our Joy") enclosed in a gilded wooden frame.
Recommended.

Davvero particolare

I stumbled across this little church while I was having dinner nearby. IT was closed when I went but could still see through the glass doors. It seemed so serene and humble and cosy. It rather quiet too so great for a small genuine prayer from the heart. You got to look for it as it doesn't really scream out to you and there is a long walkway to get to it but the sign outside leads the way.
