Burgos Cathedral is monumental, it is composed of several rooms and chapels. This is not just another, let's say, is an extraordinary Chapel inside the Burgos Cathedral. Unperishable.

Perhaps the most beautiful and scenic chapel of the Burgos Cathedral; known as the Chapel of Purification, its name actually changed as it became the burial place of the Condestables de Castilla, Pablo Fernandéz de Velasco, and his wife, the countess doña Mencìa de Mendoza (the “Condestable” was a very important figure of the kingdom of Castilla, as he assumed command of the army in the event of the sovereign's absence).
The chapel also took the name of "countess' chapel", as Doña Mencìa was the architect of the agreement with the ecclesiastical authorities of Burgos for the transfer of the chapel of San Pedro and a series of adjacent buildings outside the perimeter of the Cathedral , to allow her to expand the spaces of her new foundation.
The countess was able to stipulate this agreement because, being involved in a war against Granada, her husband the "Condestable" granted his wife full powers over the family's assets and the decisions to be made in his name. Doña Mencìa was one of the most cultured women of her time, and with her marriage she brought together the riches and power of two of the richest families of medieval Castile.
In 1482 work began on the chapel, with the aim of making it a de facto funerary chapel, keeping the memory of the couple and their union imperishable; the works continued busily until 1492, the date of the death of Pablo Fernandéz de Velasco, who was initially and temporarily buried in the choir area.
From that moment, the works continued with considerable obstacles, and therefore very slowly, due to the opposition of Bernardino, son of the two "Condestables", to the completion of the work, which he considered to be outside the traditions of the Velasco family.
Bernardino had become universal heir and therefore administrator of the family assets.
Despite a thousand vicissitudes, the work was completed, but only at the beginning of the 16th century, well after Mercìa's death.
The chapel deserves a long stop, to admire its many details, the description of which is provided by the audio guide that supports the visit of the Cathedral; The vertical development and the bold shape of the vault are impressive, with the refined windows that allow natural lighting into the chapel.
There are many heraldic symbols found both outside and inside the chapel; The central retable is very noteworthy, at the foot of which the "Condestables" rest, placed in front of the two large shields representing the symbols of the Velasco and Mendoza.
Careful observation allows us to notice how the entire space inside the chapel represents the individual ideal of doña Mercìa, predominant over that of her husband (the countess' heraldry, for example, appears more important than that of Pablo); through this burial chapel, Doña Mencía wanted to guarantee the salvation of her soul, but also clearly establish her social position and her individual importance within the family to which she belonged.

It is simply spectacular, there are not many chapels of this quality in Spain and you have to visit it if you are in Burgos. Essential.

This chapel is the Chapel of the Purification, but also known as the Chapel of the Constables from the tombs of the Constables of Castiles, Pedro Fernandez de Velasco and Mencia de Mendoza. It’s really difficult to explain just how magnificent this chapel is. The two tombs of the Constables immediately stand out in the centre of the chapel, their statues carved from marble with even the most minute of details beautifully carved into their funerary statue monuments. There are three altarpieces in the chapel. Although all are beautiful, the main altarpiece of the Presentation is by far the most spectacular. It’s a renaissance piece covered in gold, depicting scenes of the Presentation of the Child and the Purification of Mary.
The star-shaped openwork vault at the centre of the dome of the chapel is an absolute triumph of Gothic architecture. It’s a perfect blend of glass traceries and decorated keystones.

A very beautiful and grand chapel right behind the main altar of the Burgos Cathedral. A knight, who received the highest royal honor, is buried with his wife in this chapel which is sometimes referred to as a cathedral within the Cathedral. It can be visited only with the entrance to the main Burgos Cathedral. A “must see”!

Stupende.
