Amazing walk up to the summit of Mount Guajara. Views over Teide are simply stunning.
We did the circular walk from the visitor centre along the path following route 31. We then picked up route 15 to the top, lunch on the summit and then bore left after descending 100 metres or so from the summit, the geology along this part is incredible and well worth going back this way, I’d recommend getting the steep part done first as the walk back looked like more of a slog had we arrived by this route. Take plenty of water, good walking shoes, something warm to wear on the summit and enjoy! 😊

I walked up Guajara in April 2022. There's a fair amount of parking at the Parador hotel (the nearest parking to the trailhead) and across the road at the Roques de Garcia, but this is a *very* popular area so get there early or you will struggle to park.
In May (and possibly also April and June) the trail is CLOSED on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for "mouflon control". It will be obvious if the trail is closed as there will be red and white tape across the start of the trail.
You can do the walk as an out and back (which most people seemed to be doing), or as a loop (which I did). Either way it's a 600m ascent/descent.
I'd recommend the loop as a) it's a more gentle ascent (if you do the loop clockwise), and b) you get to see more.
The views from the top of Guajara are superb (photos attached).

Having summited Teide a few times and hiked a couple of other trails in the park in the past I decided to finally get around to hiking up Mount Guajara. I’d been gearing up to do it for a few days but due to inclement weather had to wait. Finally, a weather window opened and up I went!
I drove up to Teide National Park and parked outside the Parador Hotel which is ideal as it’s literally at the beginning of the trailhead. Be warned though, I hiked in January so way fewer visitors, during the summer months it’s anarchy and you’ll struggle to get a parking space!
The start of the hike is fairly flat and easy going with easy to follow trail markers. However, as you reach the point where you start to ascend the path becomes a little trickier to follow. I must admit I went in the wrong direction a couple of times, if it wasn’t for doubling back and following the footsteps of the only other handful of hikers on the mountain it would have turned into a very long day!
If you’re going to hike in the winter be prepared for sudden changes in weather! I experienced every season on the way up, starting with spring, then the clouds rolled in becoming autumnal……then it started snowing!! Hiking up a mountain in snow makes things very ‘interesting’ ie cold, reduced field of vision, slippy conditions!
The hike itself is reasonably hard going (the summit is at 8,917ft) though not being fully ‘hike-fit’ didn’t help but anybody reasonably fit should be able to reach the summit in 2-3 hours going at a steady pace.
It was worth the effort to get to the summit though, the views are astounding!! The summit is more table-top than peak so plenty of places to sit around and enjoy the scenery! A great way to end the hike is to just sit, have lunch and look out over the national park, watching the clouds slowly drift pass the summit of the Teide massif.
A great day and highly worth it!

600m upwards and then eventually 600m downwards (with a starting point of the parking lot of Parador de Cañadas del Teide). Tough? Yeah, kind of. It took us 2 hours at a slow-ish pace and plenty of resting to reach the top. Worth it? Totally.
The top of the third highest mountain of Tenerife (Guajara) gives you a stunning and beautiful view of El Teide spreading out widely. The top also has neat tables and seats made out of stones where you can do a proper break and rest before heading down; including the remains of the world's first "high-mountain" astronomical observatory, apparently.
Besides the top though, you will get to see many different shades of the local vegetation and scenery. Really pretty! 😊
Tip: Bring at the absolute minimum 1l of water per person, with 2l/person being significantly better.
