The largest Commonwealth War Cemetery in Normandy. Like all war cemeteries it was an emotional experience. Thousands of very young men who perished during the battle are buried here. A beautiful place of quiet contemplation and reflection.

Beautifully kept. Very poignant visit on the 80th anniversary. So sad to see do many graves. Also the monument on the other side of the road with 1800 names of heroes with no grave

It is different from the American and feels more personal because the headstones have inscriptions from the families of the deceased soldiers. Stopping to read some of them is very overwhelming.
Well worth the visit

When you walk around here you get asked why so many people had to die?
Because there was a man and with him a large population who thought: Its own people first. And now when you hear that again everywhere in the "civilized" world, you get sad. Didn't we learn anything? Should people be killed again because we cannot share our wealth fairly?
Who and what do we learn from our history?

A beautifully maintained British cemetery, within walking distance of the nearby museum "Mémorial de la bataille de Normandie"
There are 4,642 soldiers buried here, British, Canadians, Australians, New Zealanders, South African, Russians, Poles, French, Czechoslovaks, Italians and Germans.
The layout of the cemetery is reminiscent of this one in Flanders but of the 1st World War.

We drove to Bayeux to emmerse ourselves in the war history. We started the day exploring the Bayeux Memorial Museum and then the Commonwealth War Graves. 17 Australians buried there along with 3935 from the United Kingdom, 181 from Canada, 466 Germans, 25 from Poland, and others. We found 9 of the sites. Then, onto Batterie de Longues-sur-Mer, where there were well preserved WW11 gun installations built by the Germans. It is very sobering reading about what went on during these times. The sacrifices young men and women made for their country, their families, and so we have the freedoms we have now. If you have the opportunity to fit in a guided tour, I believe it would be well worth it. Ours, this time, was self-directed.

I am a very enthusiastic battle field tourist and supporter of the CWGC. Even by their own high standards and the proximity to the 89th anniversary, Bayeux War Cemetery simply stunning, we visited very early in the morning and had the place to ourselves - truly humbling to walk amongst heroes.

We were pleasantly surprised by this cemetery. Not always indicated as a place to do when visiting the landing beaches, we strongly recommend it if you have the time.
Very calm, peaceful cemetery, the graves are extremely flowery unlike other cemeteries... a lot of emotions emerge!

Don't know if this is a bit late, but we stayed in the Premier Classe in Bayeux, about €42 a night for a room (didn't bother with breakfast but I've heard it's good). It's clean and comfortable and about 10 minutes walk from the centre of Bayeux. Excellent base to see stuff from.

Hi there, unfortunately dogs are not allowed. I had to wait outside with ours while hubby had a quick look round. There is a nice seat at the gate where you can wait and you can see the graves from there too. To be fair, the grounds are kept immaculately so I can understand why they may not want dogs in there.

Hi,
We are visiting Normandy in Feb 2016, would you be able to tell us how much the entry costs are, as we would very much like to visit and pay our respects.
Thank you.

Hi Patricia,
Thanks for your enquiry, please see below:
The town of Bayeux, in Normandy, lies 30 kilometres north-west of Caen. Bayeux War Cemetery (British War Cemetery) is situated in the south-western outskirts of the town on the by-pass (D5), which is named Boulevard Fabian Ware. On the opposite side of the road stands the Bayeux Memorial.
Please visit the CWGC website for further details - you can search by cemetery or by name.
Thank you.
