The great cathedral Notre-Dame in Bayeux is one of the most important churches in Normandy. It was built between 1047 and 1077 on the ruins of a burned-down predecessor. Later it was gradually converted from a Romanesque cathedral to a Gothic cathedral. It is worth taking a look inside. Especially the colorful stained glass windows are impressive.

Despite the crowds in Bayeux this is a place of calm and beauty. The cathedral is well worth visiting on your way to the museums.

If you are in Bayeux, worth a visit, but otherwise not so special.
There are as many as thirteen in a dozen of these kinds of cathedrals.
The crypt was beautiful to see.

I recently visited the Cathedral of Bayeux which is a very beautiful building
With beautiful stained glass windows it is a nice visit to do when you are in bayeux
Moreover I witnessed one evening the sound and light
It lasts about 20 minutes It's in the forecourt of the cathedral It's very well done
And beautiful to see

This cathedral rebuilt on a previous building destroyed by the Vikings dates from the first half of the 11th century, combining a late Romanesque and Gothic construction of the 13th century.
Less well known than the great Gothic cathedrals, it is nevertheless magnificent and perfectly harmonious despite successive reworkings and, rarely, for the buildings of these periods it was finished.
It enjoys space on its entire periphery, which is not common, allowing you to admire it from all angles.
Its completion is due to Odon half brother of William the Conqueror who is believed to be the origin of the world famous tapestry.
It was on display in the cathedral from 1077, 10 years after the conquest of England.
The spectacular façade is of late Romanesque style and has no less than 5 portals that have retained their decorations, apart from the statues... see in particular the magnificent "gallery of bishops".
The ineffable Violet the Duke wanted to destroy the central tower that completes the harmonious aspect of the whole, but the inhabitants stood firm and a solution was found to save it.
The side portal with 2 entrances is also very successful.
The interior is just as interesting perfectly combining the 2 architectural styles.
The original stained glass windows have been destroyed ... see however the canopy of the north transept more recent but in the style of the primitive period.
Among the many chapels that of Saint Thomas Becket is the prettiest.
Finally do not miss the visit of the crypt with painted walls dating from the primitive construction and which came to us as it is because walled long during the work of the thirteenth century.
Go out for a walk in the old town which, unique in this area, kept many medieval houses being spared in 1944.

Cathedral rebuilt over time, very beautiful Norman Gothic style, I was impressed by the 5 portals of the facade, (Romanesque and Gothic arches, the friezes of the capitals) while inside I admired the large stained glass windows that give plays of light between the naves. Consecrated in 1077 by Bishop Odo of Conteville in the presence of his brother King of England, William the Conqueror. In the interior frescoes denote the strong English links of the cathedral.... they depict the life of Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury, also it is said that the Bayeux Tapestry was commissioned by the Bishop to decorate its nave (now it is under a long display case in the Museum). Nice and quick visit.

Lovely grand cathedral and no entrance fee.
Well maintained inside and out.Information in English and French at ppints all through the building.
Crypt interesting not many of those open to the public.
Did have a light show certain evenings, in Summer but unfortunately didn't get to see that.
Well worth a look.

This cathedral is stunning. The stained glass windows (designed by a woman) are so beautiful and different. The inside is pretty magnificent too. We were lucky to visit when there was a summer light show at dusk which was so cool and beautiful. The cathedral is free to visit which is a bonus. Definitely visit here if you are in the city.

It is a huge cathedral in gothic style. It is a crypt in the cathedral with beautiful murals. There are also some fantastic stained-glass windows to admire.

We will be traveling to Bayeux in April 2023 and will be in town for Easter Sunday. Is the cathedral working church and where can I find a schedule for Easter mass? Do we have to contact the diocese to get a reservation or can we just walk in?
發表日期:2022年9月16日
I attended Sunday mass there late in August, my impression was it was a working church, with ushers, seats, and a surprisingly full congregation. But the other churches in the diocese seem to be closed unless it's their turn to host Sunday mass, so maybe there's a rotation. I expect it will be open Easter as it is the bishop's seat. Definitely contact the diocese in advance.

Can someone please tell me which nights the light show is on? Thanks.

We're going to Paris mid-September. One of the sights I'd like to see if Notre Dame Cathedral.
I've heard that it was going to be closed due to ... cleaning / whatever..
Is this true and if so, when do they expect it to open up again?
Thanks
發表日期:2019年2月2日
They are unlikely to close the Cathedral entirely. It is a working church. There may be some scaffolding in places but you should still be able to get in and to wander around. It is a most beautiful place and you won't be disappointed. If part of the Cathedral is being cleaned or renovated and you can't see it then that is a perfect reason to plan a return. My bride and I always try to have something saved for "next time." That ensures that we return. Enjoy your trip!!!

In 1955, as a small child, I stayed with my family in a hotel which my mother described as being right next to the Cathedral. She referred to it as the Hotel Notre Dame in her diary. She thought it probably dated back to the time of William the Conqueror, and said it was very like a castle. Does it still exist? I can't find it on-line.

The cathedral Notre Dame of Bayeux was dedicated with William the Conquer in attendance. The current building has many gothic and later additions. It is well worth seeing. It’s in Bayeux.

Hi
Could you please tell me the time of the light and sound show at the cathedral?
Thanks
