A peaceful retreat, where you can quietly reflect both on your own life and also those of some of the world’s great enlighteners. Put on some lipstick and pucker up to kiss the grave stone of Sartre and de Beauvoir. There’s many more to reflect on too, just do a quick search for : Montparnasse cemetery map.
Enjoy!

Pełno kwiatów i drzew.

Visiting cemeteries is perhaps an acquired taste. But the cemeteries of Paris are particularly beautiful. And Montparnasse Cemetery has the peculiar distinction of being a haven of peace in the heart of a lively city. A measure of this is you see office workers and students strolling through or having their lunch there, and individuals or families carrying flowers or watering cans for flowers to the graves of loved ones.
Famous people, from Baudelaire to Beckett, are buried there. So are the not so famous. They are all equal now. And life goes on. Those are the kind of thoughts that spring to mind for my wife and myself every time we go there. Which is every time we visit Paris.
It’s a perfect place to pause and reflect (and get away from other tourists). And, afterwards, it’s just a short walk to La Closerie des Lilas, a superb and beautiful bar and restaurant, where those such as Hemingway celebrated life as well as lamenting its inevitable passing.

If you can get a map of who is buried where, then you can find things quickly. I went to wander and spent two hours roaming the beautiful grounds and reading tombstones and the names on crypts. So many beautiful statues.
