had a guided tour of the theatre royal then walked to the cathedral for some lunch in the refectory followed by a walk round the cathedral; the ham, egg and chips was very good, very nice chips, we even came back for coffee and cake after walking round the town before getting back on our coach

We are writing this review based on this particular location, but it's really a combined site with several attractions.
This block, more or less, of Bury St. Edmunds includes this Cathedral and the equally interesting St. Mary's church. Both are worth a visit, and they are more or less on the same campus.
The Cathedral has a modern tower and is very impressive. The staff was very nice. The structure itself has a long history dating back roughly 1,000 years, but it became a cathedral relatively recently.
Singly, this is interesting, but try to walk around and see the entire campus.

Perhaps it was its newness but this place didn't quite "hit the spot" as others did recently. Having said this, the new tower (added from 2000) fits in perfectly in its context and is a super demonstration of the quality of existing masonry skills. Free to enter so do go and check this place out.

Nice place, very pleasant people, we made a prayer and then build 10 LEGO bricks (one pound each) to build lego cathedral.

Visited on Monday 08th April 2024 as part of a general trip to Bury St Edmunds. I parked in the Cattle Market car park and walked across the town to the Cathedral grounds. The grounds are spectacular enough as they contain the remains of a destroyed abbey but once you enter the Cathedral it's like entering something from Camerlot. I have never come across a Cathedral with such a range of textures and colours on the floor, cleaning and stained glass. Excellent signage detailing the significant aspects of the Cathedrals features inc history, and the font is a wonder to behold. Easy contactless voluntary contribution available as well as toilet facilities and cafe/shop. The Cloester is very photogenic as is the whole building. I have visited dozens of Churches and Cathedrals and you can get a little fatigued in terms of the similarities but this was a surprise in the best kind of way.

Visited today and was not expecting so much noise, mess, people walking around on mobile phones, laughter and joking.
As the building was being prepared for a gig that evening it was more like a building site with roadies bashing and crashing about.
When I mentioned this to the staff they advised me that it was to make cash and people liked the Cathedral as a music venue and was a regular occurrence.
So if you are looking for a spiritual experience or a quiet place for contemplation don't go to Bury St Edmunds Cathedral as it's pretty much just a entertainment hall to have fun time...

A wonderful cathedral steeped in history and in a beautiful setting. The gardens behind are well kept and contain the remains of the older monastery. Walking round these gives a sense of how astonishingly large the site was originally. Also fascinated to see how modern houses have been built into the ruins themselves (and by modern I mean only a few hundred years old). The cathedral cat wandering about is quite friendly.

We visited on a Sunday. Glorious weather and plenty of space to wander around the gardens and Abbey. If you have young children it’s ideal a couple of play areas in addition to the parkland.
The cathedral is impressive with many stained glass windows to admire. We were given a warm welcome. Free to enter just asking for a donation. Well stocked gift shop.

St Edmundsbury Cathedral stands as a testament to the intersection of spirituality, history, and architectural grandeur. From the moment I approached this magnificent structure, I felt a profound sense of reverence and awe.

Visited yesterday 3rd November. It's always a welcoming place. Lovely people in gift shop, restaurant and main building. A place of peace and hope, you can light a candle for someone you care about, and a hope you hold, and place prayer cards.

Hi,
I'm not sure what you are asking to book for? If it's Tower Tours then pop to our website.
Do let me know if there's anything else I can help with.

How far is the cathedral from the station - walking distance?
發表日期:2015年10月30日
It takes about 10/15 minutes to walk. There are two routes - either through the town centre or straight along Fornham Road/Northgate Street (more or less in a straight line from the station to Angel Hill, where the Cathedral is located)

The Millennium Project, which included the building of the Tower, was funded from 3 sources. The project would not have happened had it not been for a bequest of £2 million from the Stephen Dykes Bower Trust (the former Cathedral architect who died in 1994). In addition to this gift, £4 million was raised through public appeal and £6 million was provided by the Millennium Commission, therefore making the total project cost £12 million (Tower, Chapel of the Transfiguration, North Transept, Crypt Treasury and East Cloisters).
