Simply beautiful historical and garden site to visit. Bicycles are not allowed. Walking dogs on short leashes is permitted. Many individuals of all ages can be found wandering the grounds or sitting among the benches enjoying the sites. The gardens are stunning, and currently, littlest are permitted to climb some of the ruins- which is a great energy spender. Many bridal parties can be seen getting photos here, and we had our recent family photos taken on The Abbey grounds. It’s such a stunning location to enjoy a morning stroll. Sadly, the water garden area is typically closed off. Following a visit to the Abbey grounds, be sure to wander up through Angel Hill to visit the shops, restaurants, and thrift stores. It’s a delightful area to spend the day!

A great, and free place to explore in Bury. We traveled with young kids and enjoyed exploring the ruins and the gardens, and the playground!

Amongst the richest abbeys in England during its heydays, this once mighty abbey has largely fallen into ruin since the dissolution of the monasteries in the 16th century. Two magnificent towers still remain though, The Abbey Gate and The Norman Tower to the south. The size and distance from each other gives a real sense of just how magnificent the abbey must’ve been. As for the abbey itself, there’s not a lot to see, mostly just low walls, remains of columns and some taller walls that seem to defy gravity.

.. are pretty extensive and very photogenic. They are not fenced off so you can touch them and walk on them (if you dare).

The ruins are really extensive and there are a lot of information boards dotted around that are very interesting. The gardens are well kept with a good variety of plants. The only drawback is, on a sunny day, it gets very crowded and loses any atmosphere.

It's something you have to visit when you are in Bury St. Edmunds. There are so many ruins all around the park. It's a really peaceful, enjoyable walk and a good picnic spot. Useful information boards are near each group of remains. Recommended.

Lovely building and well worth a look when in Bury. The cathecral ground are also lovely and they have popular cafe. Nice to see the tower complete (it wasn't there when I list visited Bury in the late 80s). Nice gift shop.

Hello, could you please tell me how many months of the year the squirrels are in hibernation? Where do they hibernate? How do they go back to exactly where it was that they buried their nuts?
