This Roman column is here to remind everyone of just how massive was the Roman influence on the city all those years ago.
It's good for a photo-op.

This column now re-sited just outside and within the throw of a discus by a Roman centurion from the south front of York Minster was discovered at n 1969 buried under one of its towers broken and lying on its side. It is believed to have been part of the Roman fortress of Eboracum, headquarters of the sixth legion in the 4th century. It had previously been erected by the 9h legion in the first century. It was given by the Dean of York to the city and was unveiled in 1971 to commemorate the 1900th anniversary of the City’s founding in AD 71. Its companion can still be seen in the Minster’s undercroft.

Когда-то здесь был большой римский зал, который поддерживали 36 колонн. На сегодняшний день осталась только одна, которая поддерживает крышу этого зала. Колонна была обнаружена сломанной и погребенной под башней Йоркского собора в 1969 году.

The Roman Column in the shadows of the magnificent York Minster is a reminder of the influence the Roman Empire had not just on our country but for most of the known world at that period of time.
The Roman Column is the only one of sixteen known columns that has survived that once were part of north eastern colonnade of the Roman Legion Headquarters building of the VI Legion .
Archeologists discovered the column while excavating beneath the York Minster in 1969 ,dedicated to the city of York in 1971 to mark the 1900th anniversary of the founding of the city .
The Roman Column stands 9.5 metres high and apparently stands the wrong way up ,to be honest I've never noticed this ,I just love the history attached to this Grade II Listed structure, the one thing that always springs to my mind whenever I view the Roman Column is were are the other 15 colunms and how much more Roman history is yet to be discovered in York.
If you enjoy your history I highly recommend you seek out the Roman Column.

If you are visiting the Cathedral you will walk right past it it’s an interesting piece of history but not worth a special trip

On a visit to York Minster we noticed a rather forlorn column, adjacent to an old grey building, at a corner of the square and just opposite to the statue of Constantine the Great. It is said that this is the only remaining column of sixteen similar columns that once were part of a great Roman hall, where they supported the roof of a basilica, or headquarters of Eboracum, the Roman name for York. It is also believed that this is where Constantine was declared Emperor in 306 AD. The column is cylindrical, made from grey grit stone, standing the wrong way up apparently, on a square plinth. It was discovered beneath the York Minster, in 1969 by archeologists excavating the foundations and was donated to the city of York in 1971 to mark the 1900th anniversary of the city's founding in AD 71, and has remained in its present location in 1971.

There is an informational plaque a bit above eye level, not so easy to read because of the column curvature. The column became an English Heritage Grade II listed building in 1983, and is primarily of historical or even curiosity interest.

Not sure how much to say about a Roman column near the minster that’s upside down. Easy to see and obviously it’s very old

Si la vi cuando visitaba la Catedral pero no pareció tener un mayor interés pues podía ser un monumento conmemorativo a cualquier cosa. Francamente me enterado que era un resto romano por esta página pasa muy inadvertida la columna.

York is justifiably famous for its associations with being a city dominated by its rich Roman connections, known as Eboracum, the most stunning remains of their occupation are the wonderful Roman Walls that encircle this city on the River Ouse ,another amazing piece of Roman architecture is The Roman Column located in front of the stunning Minster.
This 9.5 metre high column was once part of the north eastern colonade of the Roman Legion headquarters building of the VI Legion.
Dating from C100 AD the column was discovered by archeologists excavating beneath the Minster in 1969 and was donated to the city in 1971 to mark the founding of the city in C71AD ,its 1900th anniversary. Its location is awesome, lots of people visit the Minster so will inadvertently view the column, makes for some great photographic opportunities and is most definitely well worth checking out.
Easy to locate in front of Treasures House on Minster Yard.

......ok so it’s actually Roman. Nice to take a look but you get the feeling that it’s been put there because they didn’t know what else to do with it!
