Hoxa Head is a strategic location overlooking the main approaches into Scapa Flow and the site of naval gun emplacements and observation towers left over from the Second World War. The Hoxa Head Car Park is about 10 minutes walk to the actual site. The site is largely abandoned and doesn’t seem to be maintained. There are paths where people have walked to the remaining buildings. There’s not a lot to see as the abandoned buildings have been cleared out. I thought it was good fun for urban explorers.

Some stunning views and it is also fascinating to see more of more recent Orkney history with the remains of WW2 buildings.

Walked out to Hoxa Head on a lovely clear day. The views were fantastic and it was amazing to see all the war buildings. Apparently the day before, a whale had been spotted in the channel from Hoxa Head.

Limited parking at the start of the walk and at the time of our visit (August) the tea room and toilets were closed.

We had seen the WWII look out and defence posts from the ferry, but the drive and walk to them was well worth it. Great to be so up close to these Scapa Flow installations.

Our only problem - we took a wrong turn on the return part of the ‘circular’ walk and added about 2 miles. Suggest a little better directional signage after one goes through the newish gate.

Enjoyable and informative.

Sadly, the tearoom is still closed despite the fact that the leaflet describing the walk present it as being up and running. The walk is of course most interesting for those with an interest in the world wars and Scapa Flow as the two extensive batteries together with the Buchanan Battery across the sound, guarded the main entrance to Scapa Flow so efficiently that the guns were never used to fire at the enemy. The lay out and foundations of accommodation huts etc are still visible, making it even more interesting. The path is not a broad one and you do need to take care several places, especially after a shower or two of rain, i.e quite frequently. I suffer from moderate vertigo but I didn't do too bad. It is also quite muddy in places. If you start the tour anticlockwise, it is a bit difficult to locate the return throuh the Hoxa Head battery to the gate and the dirt track.

A perfectly fine headland walk, tho there are far better elsewhere on Orkney. Probably of more interest if you're into wartime memorabilia given the old gun batteries from the two world wars. But if you've come this far for Hoxa Tapestry (a must visit) it's worth a stroll.

A sunny blustery day found us at the car park at Hoxa Head. The tea rooms were closed so we thought we’d just get on with the walk!!

It’s supposed to be a 1.5 mile round trip but it felt more than that. The views were stunning and the history of the place utterly incredible. So many abandoned gun emplacements, bases of camp huts, observation towers- and a fireplace attached to a lone gable wall- how sad. It’s a really impressive site.

Glad we came. Dog loved it but had to keep him on a tight lead on the cliff path!!! Those sheer drops and seagulls flying bye... recipe for disaster!!

I didn't expect to find concrete remains so exciting! I first visited Hoxa Head and Balfour Battery in September 2017 and was taken in by the signs warning not to go in/on the crumbling ruins of the gun batteries and director towers. It was probably helped by the blue skies and sun that showed off the views across to Stanger Head on Flotta and across Scapa flow. I missed the circular walk that time as I had other places to visit and wasn't sure how long it was.
This year I returned in very similar weather and completed the circular walk. The walk is quite exhilarating when it is windy and I wouldn't recommend it in cycling shoes - metal cleats aren't much good on rocks - but it is only a couple of miles and easily worth it. Just be sensible and aware that there are vertical cliffs very close to the path!
Sadly the cafe was closed but there are sheltered places to eat sandwiches and watch the Pentalina crossing from Gills Bay.

Wish I'd read some reviews first. The walk straight up the hill from the car park would have been enough, we could have seen the WW2 ruins and gone back. But, oh no, my husband wanted to do the circular walk, which starts out nice and easy (from the tea shop side). But goes to hell once you get to the rusty WW2 battlements. My husband actually found a way through the battlements and up to the pasture, away from the cliff edges, but I wasn't nimble enough. So, I continued on the circular path/cliff walk of death. Thank God it was a beautiful sunny day, because you MUST be part mountain goat and keep your wits about you to maneuver much of it. I wanted to cry! Finally my husband found a spot on the barbed wire fence that he could push down enough so I could go over it, away from the cliffs and the unending circle. Then we hiked up the hill and down the side straight back to the car. My Apple Watch recorded 11,500 steps that day. Beware!!!

There is a lovely walk to the head from the sadly closed tea rooms. It was a glorious day when we did the walk and we followed the cliff path looking over hoxa sound passing reminders of the war. Arriving at the end we stopped for a picnic and enjoyed glorious views of the coastline from both sides. After this we intended to complete the 'circular' walk only to find that the path took us to the cliff edge. After a few minutes of perilous near death experiences including a barbed wire fence on one side and a sheer cliff edge on the other we decided to retrace our steps. So our advice is by all means do the walk but do not attempt the circular route as death seems likely!
