Mazu is the patron saint of seafarers, and consequently the most popular goddess on the island of Taiwan and along the west coast of China. The temple is hundreds of years old and has some impressive carvings, including Mazu's guardian gods. Mazu was a real person, who was deified. She is said to have been a shaman. A close rival to Mazu in popularity is Guanyin, the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy.

Lukang is one of the oldest Chinese settlements in Taiwan. It dates from the 18th century. It was known as "Deer Port," because deer products were exported to mainland China. There are many temples in Lukang, among the most important deities worshipped is Mazu, the Goddess of the Sea, who is worshipped as both a Buddhist and Taoist deity. Lukang is on the western coast of Taiwan. Religious ceremonies are often held in Lukang, they are interesting to watch.
