In the West, religious traditions tend to be discrete. In Taiwan temples are often syncretic. That is, the religious traditions tend to blend with one another, as in Nantian Temple. So, while some temples such as Confucian temples are dedicated to the veneration of the Great Sage, others meld gods with Taoist or Buddhist traditions. Indeed, some traditions recognize the same deity, for example Matzu, the protector of sailors in peril on the sea, Some deities are historical figures, who have undergone an apotheosis, that is have become deified, such as Guan Yu, who is God of War and God of Wealth. Asking a Chinese person "what religion are you?" may result in confusion.

This colourful temple integrates the three main Chinese religious traditions -- Taoism, Buddhism and Confucianism. Nantian Temple is full of colour, unlike other temples which may be more sunbued. It's often confusing how three different religions can be worshipped in one temple, but it's not uncommon in Taiwan.

Nantian Temple is located in Longtan Township, in Taoyuan. The Temple integrates the three main Chinese religioius traditions -- Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism. Temple festivals often bring the three religious belief systems together. The pond is quite charming, you can often see the statues reflected in it.
