I have just returned home after spending 2 nights in the Mid-Wales Arts centre.Wow! what an amazing place which I can wholeheartedly recommend.Nothing was too much trouble for Cathy and John (the hosts and owners). After a 4 hour drive, we arrived too late for any local pub/restaurant to give us an evening meal, and within 1/2 an hour, Cathy had produced a delicious spread of cold cuts and salads and even a bottle of wine! The breakfasts were a banquet in themselves-fresh fruit platter, a choice of cereals, orange juice, yoghurt, scrumptious cooked dishes of one's choice and toasted artisan bread accompanied by Welsh cakes.
The accomodation was spotlessly clean and although the end of December was beautifully warm.We certainly intend to return, a real hidden gem!

The mid Wales Arts Centre is an amazing place. The Centre showcases the work of Stefan Knapp. He is not the household name of contemporaries Henry Moore or Barbara Hepworth. But his contribution to British post-war art is as important. By using new materials and techniques he created vibrant murals for public buildings including schools, hospitals, museums and airports. The art needs to work in large, modern buildings and as a result is highly coloured and finished.

In addition to the many murals are sketches, drawings and sculptures. His large, later work is shown in a modern gallery building while the smaller and more intimate pieces are displayed in the house. These are very well presented, keeping furniture in the rooms to give it a home feel rather than a museum. The house and outbuildings are surrounded by pleasant gardens which have more sculptures.

If you are at all interesting in art and visit art exhibitions in large cities you won't be disappointed with the quality of the artwork on display. If you are looking for a family day out it is also fine. There is even a children's sculpture trail where the works are at eye level for smaller visitors.

There is a central courtyard with outdoor seating. The cafe also has some tables indoors. It serves lunches as well as teas and cakes and vegetarians are well accommodated. In a creative touch, the tables are parts of a mural that was made but never installed. They are beautiful as furniture!

In the cafe building is a further gallery space which is showing work by mid-Wales artists. This includes paintings, lino prints, pottery, jewellery and textiles. Most of these works are for sale and many take inspiration from the mid-Wales landscape. The centre also runs art classes and has B&B accommodation - can't comment on these as we were visiting for the day.

Only comment would be it needs some clearer signage of where to go when you arrive as a visitor. Its not clear where you are supposed to start looking around or if you need to pay (its free). Thinking a bit more about how people begin their visit and are welcomed would help people start their visit confidently.

Warm welcome to a lovely location even though it was quite late & given a full explanation of the layout of the property. We were pleasantly surprised to be given 2 rooms above the gallery/cafe which had been converted from stables; they were modern, clean, secure & well fitted out. Beds were very comfortable after a hard days cycling & the bathrooms were as spotless as the rest of the property. It was a short drive into Newtown where we spent a pleasant evening in La Terrazza followed by drinks in the Pheasant. It was very peaceful on our return & following a good nights sleep we were treated to a fantastic breakfast featuring lots of healthy options including fruit platters etc. The poached egg on toast was a delight especially with the baked sausage & grilled bacon (nothing fried 🤣). The hosts couldn’t have been more helpful or friendlier - highly recommended!

The Centre is a beacon for the visual arts in mid-Wales. Range of work on display including sculpture outdoor.

We came to look at the art, not to stay at the B&B as I only live down the road from here. My friend Lilly (who was visiting from China) and I were warmly welcomed by Cathy, who gave us a list of the numbered art pieces so we could follow the information on each piece in the sculpture garden and the various buildings and barns all the wonderful pieces were housed.
After oohing and awing over the many many sculptures, paintings, collages, pottery, etc, and admiring the grounds and scenery beyond, we went inside to the cafe and had a coffee. Cathy showed us most of the house, and all the bedrooms that were not occupied. We sat with her in her lounge and chatted awhile about her vision for the Centre and about upcoming events, of which there is always something happening, be it art lessons in pottery and sculpture, painting, poetry evenings, jazz evenings, etc.

We were thoroughly impressed and agreed Cathy was a really cool woman. Will definitely go back again, it's a great place to take friends and visitors. There is a 'suggested' donation box in the hallway, which we generously fed, as it was well deserved.

We stayed here for two nights recently and it is without doubt one of the best places we have ever had bed and breakfast. I really could not think of anything that could have been done to make us feel more comfortable.
We would love to stay here again.

Had a very warm welcome from Cathy when we arrived, staying near to Plas Dinam for a two day wedding. Cathy and John could not have been more friendly and accommodating- making us lunch at the last minute and preparing food for Saturday night when we returned around 9pm. They then played cards with us and chatted into the evening. It is clearly a work in progress but we had no problems with the 3 rooms we booked, and would not hesitate to recommend Cathy and John’s Art centre

Myself and my wife were recently down for a wedding and stayed at the Mid Wales Art Centre.

Upon arrival we could not find anyone for love or money so strolled around the main house before finally meeting a lady who was one of the owners.

This is where the disorganised shambles began. Firstly not knowing what room we were in and getting all flustered muttering various things but we finally got taken up to our room which was a small double room.

God only knows when this room was last dusted. I counted 5. Yes 5 separate spiders and cobwebs all over the room. Only a curtain separated the bathroom and bedroom in a very odd setup. The TV did not work and when asked were told due to the winds the previous night the aerial was damaged but we would be welcome to watch it in the lounge.

Breakfast was ok. Not the worst and not the best and we had agreed to be seated for 9 and didn't receive our cooked breakfast till gone 9.40!! The last doing all the cooking and the husband doing next to nothing to help!!

Now on to the biggest shambles which was checking out. After £90 for 2 nights was agreed on the phone the lady tried to tell us that this was actually £90 per night totalling £180 for the 2 nights. This was because it is apparently charged as £45 per person. I can't remember the last time I stayed at a hotel who charges per person and not per room!!

The lady became really quite rude and defensive and left us with no option but to pay the £180 on a card machine.

We are local to the area and often drive past the Art Gallery but have never stopped to visit.

We received a very friendly welcome, together with an explanation of how it all started. Entry is free, but there is also the opportunity to join workshops and classes held throughout the year, for which there is a charge.

I must state that we didn't go inside the main house, so possibly missed quite a bit, but just wandered around the large gallery barn at the back and the grounds.

Not at all an expert on art and often struggle with modern art, so it does rather all come down to a matter of taste. The centre certainly provides a good outlet for local artists, some of whom had works on display.

One sleek looking inside gallery, but everything else left rather 'au naturel'.

On this occasion maybe the exhibits were just not for us. Certainly worth a visit if sculpture and art are an interest of yours.

I visited on a week day lunch time. I am not going to include the art work in my star rating as I believe that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and even though it wasn’t my cup of tea, it might be other peoples. I do however have a few things to say regarding the art work. I felt that there was way too much ‘contemporary’ art on display – both in painting and sculpture form, prices being very high from hundreds to thousands of pounds. There was a rather pretentious feeling about it all.

My rating is based on our lunch and a couple of other things. When walking round one of the sculpture trail parts there was old dog muck on the ground which really should not have been there. The lunch table could have done with a wipe – it was sticky and had old crumbs on it. We ordered for lunch some sandwiches. When these came out I was a little surprised. They were small squares of bread with cheese and cucumber or ham and tomato on top – no lid to the sandwiches – just small squares. There were 16 small squares in total on a small plate – priced at £11.00. When paying I did query the price, only to be told that we had had four slices of bread!!!!!!

The good bits – whilst the table needed a wipe, and dog muck outside, the inside of the main building was clean. There is no charge to visit and view the art and there are a number of classes being advertised that people can attend through out the year. I did enjoy some of the art work on display – I very much liked the beautifully glazed pottery in the little alcove in the main building.

I have driven past Mid Wales Arts many times and wondered – now I know.
