The flurry snow of the Mogami area made this 50 mins tranquil leisurely ride along the Mogami River especially memorable. We set off to enjoy the pristine beauty of the countryside in the Yamagata prefecture. With the comfort of heating under the table and clear waterproof tarpaulin cover all around the boat, one could easily forget the chilly snow showers outside.
The boat had a guide on board – he regaled the group with stories and songs about the area – he was most witty and entertaining – but regrettably (for us) he spoke and sang in Japanese only. Being the only non-Japanese passengers onboard, we had no grounds to complain.
We had to travel quite some distance that day to the embarking point, hence we preordered lunch boxes. Mediocre in terms of food quality but it was just timely for our packed schedule.
A gentle reminder that no toilet is available on the barge. Another survival tip – it’s best to make reservations in advance through a Japanese speaking contact point since the boat has only limited seats.

It was a cold, wintry day, but we decided to try the Mogami River Boat Trip. The trip took us downstream for about 45 minutes, and the scenery was beautiful. The boats are covered, you can bring your own food and drink (you sit at a long table in the middle of the boat), and, during the cold periods, the boat is heated. We were lucky in that we were the only guests -- a cruise for two!
The guide, who only spoke Japanese, used an app which translated answers to questions, and those answers were verbal and he played us those translated answers "real time." Midway through the cruise, he broke into a couple of songs, and he was pretty good! Maybe he gets a lot of practice in the karoke clubs.
We saw waterfalls, deserted boats, and a hiking trail that had been abandoned -- ruined by an earthquake, according to our guide. At the end of the trip, there is a bus which delivers guests back to the start (it is not free, but the charge is minimal). At certain times of the year and certain times of the day, wild animals can be seen drinking from the banks of the river.
We recommend this attraction, if you have the willingness to get to Tozawa-mura and time for an all-in two hour experience.

雪かきして、乗船桟橋まで細い道を作っていただきました。
おしんの、筏のシーンを思い出します！
外は雪景色ですが、船の中は暖房で暖かく、窓を開けて写真を撮ることが出来ました。
船頭さんの最上川舟歌がとても素敵でした！

Not so interesting. Just relax. The people were very friendly. They served tea and snack on board which very delicious.

日本のあちこちで舟下りを体験してきましたが とても楽しく愉快に過ごせる船頭さんに巡り合い 時間を忘れ 他のツアーの方達とも 笑い転げる程に早く時間が過ぎました

水量が多い時期だったので、難所の瀬は水に沈んで、難所感はほとんどありませんでした。
船はモーターなので風情はありませんが、それでも昔の人の上り下りを思い浮かべながら下る
船旅はいい体験でした。
途中にはテレビで有名になった（という）家が猫の顔に見えるネコの家（写真有り）があったり
橋の下をくぐるときは川面が波立ってちょっとスリルは味わえました。
川筋はまっすぐではなくUターンするような大きな曲がりもありそこそこ変化はあります。
どちらも初老の船頭とガイドが乗り組んでいますが、
ぼやきながら（しかし余裕たっぷりの）の案内は面白かった。
これで評価1ポイントアップです。
これが無くて一般的なガイドなら評価は3かな。
私たちはJR出の移動だったので村山駅からのアクセスを相談したら
無料で送迎してくれて親切な対応が嬉しかったです。
午前10時・11時50分 午後2時・4時（1日４回運行）
送迎：船着き場から乗船所まで無料
冬期間（11月11日〜4月30日）は団体のみで午前10時のみ運行
