There was a Toko brewery in the urban area a few hundred meters from the site of Yonezawa Castle toward JR Yonezawa Station. Toko's brewery also houses a brewery museum. The Sake Brewery Museum is large and worth seeing, but even more than that, I was expecting a brewery directly managed store.
This brewery, particularly famous for its Toko brand, is called Kojima Sohonten and is the official liquor store of the Uesugi family of the Yonezawa Domain, founded in 1597. There was also a free tasting at the brewery directly managed store, but it was also possible to taste premium sake and contest-winning sake at reasonable prices, which are not usually casual. We bought Toko's Dry Junmai Daiginjo and Ginjo Umeshu. I haven't opened my mouth yet, but I'm looking forward to drinking it.

This is a museum where one company sells and promotes its products. I don't understand why a private company is being recommended on a tourist route based on information provided by a local government. This is a typical example of the relationship between local governments and major companies, but I can't help but think that it is just a way to direct profits to a specific company.

Awesome sake museum with tasting options! The descriptions are in English and the staff are very friendly. The museum explains well the history of their sake, how it was made and its development. The tasting is very fun and accessible for people who do not know much about sake/ want to learn.

Visited this historic sake brewery in March 2023. Impressive building and equipment on display, supposedly used for hundreds of years dating back to when this brewery supplied the local Daimyo.
Lots of explanations in English and the tasting at the end using "Gatcha Gatcha" was affordable (400 yen for 3 sake tastings) and fun. Tried all 8 sakes available and enjoyed tasting all of the differences. Highly recommended to those curious about sake!

As a sake fan, I decided to stop by the museum during a recent trip to Yonezawa. I really enjoyed wandering through the historical building, experiencing the atmosphere of a Meiji era sake brewery, and seeing all the equipment used during various parts of the brewing process.
I also loved trying the different sakes at the store and buying their gingo plum sake as a souvenir of my trip!!! It was so good!!
Whether you're a seasoned sake enthusiast or just want to learn a bit about sake, I would definitely recommended visiting this place when you're in Yonezawa.

東光の酒蔵を訪れました。
試飲は有料で、コインを買って、マシンに入れるシステムです。
久しぶりに訪れたつれあいは、酒蔵もすっかりキレイになり、モダンシステムも入り、「以前とすっかり変わった。」と、言ってました。
お酒以外のお土産品も売ってました。大吟醸の酒粕も売ってます。

東北最大級の酒造資料館。創業は安土桃山時代、米沢藩上杉家御用酒屋をつとめた老舗です。
歴史ある館内をゆっくり見学、有料試飲は自販機タイプ。献上酒、純米大吟醸を美味しくいただく。土産に数本購入。

This museum is set up in a former sake brewery to evoke a sake brewery of at least a century ago. There is even a very unusual ceramic vat once used for fermentation. Other barrels and brewing equipment are also displayed. A massive poster provides a timeline of the entire brewing process.
There is a delightfully appointed tasting room as well as a cozier refreshment area and, of course, an excellent shop. We did a tasting of two sakes and their plum wine. All excellent! We finished with a taste of the spring water they use in their sake (brewed at a more modern brewery nearby).

コロナ禍につき試飲は中止されております。
東北最大規模とのことでしたが、館内は酒造りとは無関係な展示も多く、純粋に酒造りを知るなら、昨年訪れた喜多方市にある大和川酒造北方風土館の方が楽しめた印象です。
