A couple of days ago we went to Okayama to visit friends and they very kindly took us to the village as they knew I was interested in Japanese swords and history.
It was a marvellous experience, we were lucky that on this particular Sunday the swordsmiths were doing a demonstration on taking the raw metal that has been made from sand from the nearby mountains and heating it to a very high temperature of 1300 degrees and pounding it into shape with very heavy hammers and then folded over , then heated again and folded again, this folding can happen up to fifteen times and this is why these Japanese swords that the Samurai used in battle were soo strong.. It was great to watch them , hard hot work, they told us a good sword can take up to six months to make and are very expensive. The demonstration went for about an hour , we were offered safety glasses to wear as there are a lot of sparks flying about when two guys start hitting the molten metal, good idea to use them especially if you are up the front getting the best view. This demonstration happens on the 2nd, Sunday of every month and happen at 11am, and 2pm. Well worth seeing how the masters have worked the metal to be able to make these super strong swords for hundreds of years.
We then went into the museum part of the village where you can view many ancient swords made by famous Masters hundreds of years ago , many were made in the 14th. Century, one sword there has been declared a national treasure, I believe owned by a very famous Samurai warrior, so much history, and I thought as I was looking at this amazing display of famous swords , they were all used in battle.
There is a nice gift shop at the village, so if your real keen you can buy a replica but a original would have to be ordered and would cost thousands of dollars.
Opening hours are from 9am. to 5 pm. Closed Mondays. Admission 500 Yen, very good value..
Thankful our friends took us there, highly recommend.

I came on a Saturday afternoon and all the workshops were closed for some reason which was kind of a bummer. If you're (really) into Japanese swords then you'll love this place. If not, you'll probably find it rather boring. The museum is just literally two rooms of blades in stands. I loved it, but as I said, some people wouldn't really 'get it' and probably leave after 2 minutes. Some gorgeous blades, that's for sure!
One thing to keep in mind too is that all printed explanations about each blade are only in Japanese. Would have been great to see the smiths at work too....maybe next time.

In a seat-back pocket in a taxi, I happened to find information about the annual Bizen Festival. As it happened to be the next weekend, and we happened to have visitors coming, we included it in our plans.
I was neber a great fan of Bizen Pottery before. It seemed a bit dull and subdued, but here we had a chance to see a wide range of wares in a multitude of hues of dull and subdued. I began to appreciate the subtlethy of expression and the beauty of the earth tones.
We got there on an overcrowded train, which seemed to take forever to get there from Okayama station. Then, I was in a long line because the local statuon was not equipped to deal with my train pass electronically.
Eventually emerging into the streets of the village, we found them lined with stall after stall selling Bizen ware. There were several sttreets and a number of open areas like this, a bewildering variety of pottery on display. People angling to get closer, looking, touching, appreciating. The prices were, apparently, better than on non-festival days and we did indeed by a number of pieces. Other stalls provided food and snacks. Regular stores fronting onto the street displayed the best of their wares. Nice atmosphere, friendly and appreciative.
In fact, the display and variety were so good that we are reluctant to go back on a non-festival days, when presumably only the shops would be selling pottery. Worried we might be disappointed.

Its a great place to see if your intersted in nihon to. The museum contains some important koto swords but is as small as the one in Tokyo.
Great to meet masters on the subject, forging, saya, tsuka maki. rich souvenir shop with lots of beautiful sageo .
On Sunday special workshops where you can see the masters at work. and even try it yourself if you enroll before in a special program online .
There is also a very special nihonto/katana shop nearby . Ask at the museum .
If its on your way its worth going but otherwise...can be hard to get there and also to find accommodation
