温泉街から歩いていける距離にあり、夕食を済ませたとしても唎酒に寄るだけで楽しい。プレミアムな日本酒も少量で味わえます。

The free Sake-tasting ticket, which you may get at hotels or the local tour office, says you can "tast" one Sake with it here. The amount of Sake they offered us with the ticket was most likely less than 5 ml...seriously. It's just morsel, tidbit. Too little to tast sake. You can barely "lick" it literally. We jawdropped at their stinginess. Anyhow, it's a free ticket, and if you really want to taste Sake, you have to "pay", of course. Be careful not to be hooked by the ticket. It's a terrible promotional bait.

Only spending a brief night in the Zao Onsen area. Glad we picked a hotel related to this sake museum through which we came to know of this hidden gem.
We arrived after dusk on a snowy day. The sake museum is located on the first floor of a nondescript building at a street corner. No obvious signage with a few flags flying under the spotlights. We climbed the steps to get to the entrance.
Other guests before us kept the place warm for us but it was not busy at all. The museum listed a majority of sake breweries in Yamagata prefecture on their pay-as-you-go menu. Over 50 bottles of 1.8L sake hoisted in two wine fridges for visitors to sample Yamagata sake.
Diving head long first into our free drink - offered to guests of our ryokan of the same group. A choice of three for that day. Not bad, no complaints. We quickly moved onto checking some of the bottles at their menu which was largely divided into geographical areas of the prefecture produced by the brewery. Their menu was extensive including some not easy-to-find bottles. We rounded up with two of the museum’s tasting sets, grouping sake of different locations according to their taste. All very thought out. Friendly English speaking staff served us hot water on request.
This sake museum added sparkle to our visit to Zao Onsen. Its wild collection of sake brought perspective and added excitement to this well known ski resort. Discovering different Yamagata sake should be the best way to spend here in Zao Onsen with lack of snow this time of the year - no frost trees yet. Very causal drinking venue without seats. Do drop by to check this place out.
Did not realise the museum shared the floor with its connected restaurant/bar serving local Yamagata cuisine until the museum staff told us so. Unfortunately closed that night. Food menu looked interesting.
