Enjoyable experience but..."
2019年11月
My husband and myself stayed at the Marriott resort about 10 minutes away from this village which was handy.

First of all we decided not to take the optional lunch package as we had not long finished breakfast.
We meet with our tour guide who on the way explained all about the village and the culture of the place.
Then it all started to slowly go down hill from there. Not 5 minutes out of the resort we were told that we were expected to bring a gift to the chief of the village as a sign of respect. So we stop at this little shop just out of the resort and go in and he tells us that we should buy some Kava maybe fj$15 worth.
So that’s fine we start our trip to the village again.

Then we get to the village to be greeted by the chief of the village who pops some sea shells around our necks with a greeting. Then he starts putting a sarong around our waists (which was not even a proper sarong it’s just a piece of material that’s been bought and not even sewn, just ratty frayed edges.) My husband gives him the Kava which you could see he was expecting too.
We have a small ceremony in there meeting house then takes us too the church. I make a small donation into the donation box.
He then says.....”oh I forgot to tell you those lovely sarongs are fj$10 each” and waits for me to hand over the money.
We then head back to the meeting house to finish off the meet ‘n greet but we are not invited into the meeting house this time we are given the left over Kava just outside the door this time. We felt that was a bit rushed.
He then asks if we would like to see the souvenirs shop, virtually leading us there.
We go to someone’s front veranda who has a table set up with trinkets and wood carving.
The pressure to buy something is put on us is really uncomfortable, so I felt obligated too of course buy. I ended up buying a couple of wooden things for fj$35 that would have been approx fj$25 in Nadi.
The chief then says thanks for coming hope you enjoyed your time here bye.

We then head to the local school and told by the driver to just get out and go into the office.
We had to wait as there were 3 other people in there on a tour so not enough room.
When they left we went in and were greeted by the head-mistress.
She was very pleasant and told us all about the school and the history which was very interesting.
We then had a tour of the school that consisted of walking up the outside of the building about 100 meters, turned around went back to the office told about the donation box for the children’s end of year Christmas party asked to sign the visitors book and was then told thank you very much for coming to visit blah blah blah and bye.

Our drive/guide was sitting in the car waiting for us.

Now please don’t get me wrong here. We did enjoy our experience BUT....
The whole tour took 1.5 hour for a price of fj$160 @ 2, then with the donations to the church then the school and the money for the sarongs, buying souvenirs and the Kava
we paid about fj$70++
The experience didn’t feel natural and all felt a bit rushed.

The whole tour we felt pressured to buy or donate something so we were waiting to be asked to hand money over all the time.

The school tour we expected to at least interact with a class to say a quick hello or meet some kids, but that didn’t even happen.
At the end I managed to talk a few kids into having there photo taken which they really loved. This was the only relaxed natural experience we both felt for the whole 1.5 hr tour.

We then headed back to our resort all within an hour and a half.

Enjoyed this experience but.....
I’ll start with the positives... it was a great experience to see the village and the local school. We loved the singing and dancing and the lunch was amazing. Such a shame it was at 11 am though as we were still full from the buffet breakfast of our resort and did not eat much. The HUGE negative was that the whole 3 hours felt like it was all about money unfortunately. First of all when I got quoted over messager and I thought I’d go pay online to make it easier (which the company was happy for me to do) there was a $100 difference online. Apparently we got special prices. Maybe because we were the only family doing the tour that day? So obviously I did not pay online and reconfirmed to make sure what we were quoted we will be paying on the day. Then when you arrive at the village you have no choice but to purchase a sarong @ $10 per person. I think it should be mentioned into the quote as you’re forced to buy it. No asking. And 3 times while they’re explaining what we were going to do they mentioned about us having to go pay for the sarong before we could do anything else. Then there’s souvenirs and donations for the school and tips for the singer and dancers and the driver hanging around expecting a tip at the end (having only driven us 7 kms 1 way and by then we had run out of cash). So in the end you end up paying $110 ++ for all of it. It just didn’t feel natural and just felt like everything was done to get money. After every little experience we had, there was something to buy or to pay for. And of course you feel obligated. It ruined the experience a bit unfortunately.
