A Must Do

SO glad I booked this day tour to Hobbiton and the Waitomo Glowworm Caves! I visited Hobbiton 6 years ago on a trip to NZ and knew I had to return as they just opened their new Beyond the Door experience on 1 December.

I decided to book this tour because I didn’t want to navigate the logistics of finding my way to the set as a solo traveler with limited time in Auckland. Going to the caves was an added bonus!

I was picked up from my CBD accommodation promptly at 6:30 am. I knew what bus to look for thanks to the two emails I received confirming the bus, time and how to prepare.

After hopping on the bus, the guide Mike, made sure to include everyone in the conversation and encouraged us to get to know each other with introductions. It was a fairly quiet group overall, but I still found it easy to chat with the others and Mike throughout the day.

I loved that we had a pit stop half way from Auckland to Hobbiton for a quick stretch and photo opportunity.

Mike made sure to give us a run down of what to expect at each upcoming stop well in advance. Mentally preparing is important!

Hobbiton is 10/10 - you HAVE TO GO. The Glowworm Caves were interesting and it was great learning some history of the site.

Absolutely recommend this tour and I hope you have Mike as your guide!

Really enjoyed this tour and found that the two activities actually quite complimented each other! Hobbiton is definitely worth seeing even if you aren't an avid Lord of the Rings fan. The attention to the detail is very interesting to see and hear about. The glow worm caves are amazing and seeing it in real life is very mesmerising. Brenda our guide was so lovely and pointed out some interesting things we passed along the way, shared some interesting kiwi related info and always made sure everyone was okay. Would definitely recommend!

We agree with your comment that Hobbiton is definitely worth seeing even if you aren't an avid Lord of the Rings fan. Like you, I find the Waitomo Glowworm Caves similarly mesmerizing. Is there any more special place to be than in the boat on the river as you glide silently through the Caverns of the Caves and you see the myriad of glowworms shing down on you? We think not. This day trip was the best! Our guide Geoff was so knowledgeable and gave us heaps of extra information about NZ the whole trip. We had heaps of time at Hobbiton and it really was magic. A great way to take the stress out of driving around these attractions yourself. You learn so much more on this tour!

So impressed with every aspect of this tour! Our guide Amethyst was simply informative, helpful and went out of her way to make every person in our group feel amazing. A simply beautiful human. As someone who loves everything LOTR! It exceeded my expectations. Hobbiton movie set is a must see! Waitomo Caves- like WOW! This hour is a most do for all travelling to Aukland. ❤️ Thank you for making my 50th birthday so incredible!

Awesome Day Tour

So fun! It was a long day but totally worth it. My sister has never seen the Lord of the Rings movies, and she had a great time as well. Mike, our tour guide, was excellent. He shared a lot of information about New Zealand, and it was awesome that he was able to pick us up directly from our AirBnB.

What a special tour and day to spend with your sister in arguably the most magical and enchanting place in New Zealand. Yes, we pick up from any accommodation in the Downtown CBD and also have 1 pickup location for anyone staying near the airport. Yes, you can't escape the travel as the attractions are 2 hours south of Auckland in the middle of nowhere; literally Middle Earth as you experienced. But what we do to mitigate this is to travel on an exclusively designed route which gets us into the country and on to the quaint country roads so you can see the real New Zealand with the stunningly spectacular and ever changing scenery of the region. Daylong tour of some key sites in the North Island of New Zealand

The trip was great to see the countryside of New Zealand. Danny was an amazing and very knowledgeable tour guide, and I would highly recommend him! It was great to see where the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings films had some filming. The true fan of LOTR will definitely want to check it out.

The Glowworm Caves were neat to see, but I was expecting a lot more than the short trip it was. Also disappointing was that you are not allowed to take pictures or videos in the caves for the glowworms. That would have been very memorable.

You are so right that LOTR fans will marvel at our tour. But as you experienced, you do not have to have watched any of the Movies or read any of the Tolkein books to marvel at our magical and enchanting tour. Half the 1 Million guests that visit the Movie Set annually have never done either. Our tour is a stand alone tour. Add in one of our highly knowledgeable guides, and you truly have a very special day and experience. Yes, you are right that you cannot take photos in the Caves where the glowworms us. The reason for this is that if everyone is flashing you will not see what you came to see; but more importantly, the glowworms react negatively to light and will turn their lights totally off. So what you came to see, you will not see and then it takes about 2 hours for them to return to their full luminescence. So your best camera are your eyes. It was a privilege hosting you. Beautiful experience for all ages.
Our tour guide David was amazing. He made sure we were taken care of throughout the whole trip. He was super informative and entertaining. The tour through Hobbiton was beautiful. Hard to believe it was real, just every where you turned was breathtaking. The Waitamo caves were so interesting and a unique place to visit. Highly recommend.

Hobbits and Glow Worms

We got on our tour coach at the Sky Tower bus station in downtown Auckland early on a Sunday morning. The bus station could use some sprucing up. We drove south through the city, then through the countryside, for about 2 hours to the movie set of Hobbiton in Waikato near Matamata. The Hobbiton set is situated on a 1,400 acre working sheep & cattle farm owned by the Alexander family. Peter Jackson approached them in 1998 to ask permission to film there. He returned in 2009 to film the Hobbit Trilogy. We arrived at the gift shop parking lot & were taken by Hobbiton staff to the start of the walking tour. The Shire which consists of hills & valleys (not suitable for wheelchairs). We saw the 44 Hobbit Holes that were used in the trilogy as we continued along the way. It was charming even if you're not a "Lord of the Rings" afficionado. I am not but I really enjoyed its sweet charm. After the walking tour we continued on the Green Dragon Inn, a beautiful restaurant, & were escorted to a lovely white tent which was dressed up inside with flowers & a lovely buffet lunch for tour groups. We were given roughly 45 minutes to enjoy lunch which was very good. It was a lovely morning/early afternoon. We got back on our coach & were driven to Waitomo Glow Worm Caves about 90 minutes further southwest. We arrived at Waitomo Caves and entered the cave which has many steep & narrow stairs (no wheelchairs). At one large cavern we were invited to sing due to the good acoustics. There were several North Americans on the tour & one lady started singing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" & several of us that knew the lyrics sang along & it sounded fantastic. The guide told us the the Beatles were there on their 1964 world tour. We went further down into the darkness of the cave with flashlights guiding us down, we got on little boats & floated further into the cave in complete darkness, then looked up to see the glow worms on the ceiling of the cave. It was very interesting. We really enjoyed the tour. It was a long day (about 12 hours). Be prepared for that. P.S. I think it was this tour company but there are others)

Thank you for sharing such descriptive comments on our tour to the 2 most iconic attractions in New Zealand. You are right that the tour is not suitable for wheelchairs as both are walking tours. Having said that, there are a couple of golf carts available at Hobbiton for anyone walking-challenged. But they must be booked well in advance as a Hobbiton guide is specifically rostered. Both the attractions are 2 hours south of Auckland so you can't negate the 10.5-11 hour day. We mitigate this by the route that we take where for 80% of the day, we get right off the motorways and on to the quaint country roads which gives us an opportunity to showcase the stunning and ever changing scenery of this region.
