Yesteryear fading grandeur was overshadowed by the street noise from late night / early morning pedestrians echoing from the walls of the very narrow streets. The furniture in a small room has seen better days. The worn-out bath towel was patched and tore again adjacent to this patch. The elevator was at the furthest place from the entrance and the check-in desk. The breakfast was served in a very ornate room but not what the doctor would recommend for a healthy meal.
This hotel appears to be a relic from Cold War days. The lobby seemed dark and a bit forbidding, but I think that was an energy-saving measure in the unusual heat. The receptionist told me I was the first American she'd seen at the hotel in 6 months, and, indeed, I seemed to have the hotel almost to myself. She spoke excellent English, offered me a coffee on the house, and seemed happy to chat and was quite informative about places of interest, Hungarian politics, etc. The room was basic, but perfectly clean and comfortable, with plentiful towels, hot water and soft sheets. I gladly paid the few extra forints for air-conditioning (yes, they charge extra for that). The hotel restaurant was closed for renovations, but there are plenty of places for a bite all around. The secure parking was free, unlike other hotels I checked out. The hotel credit card machine was broken, so they needed payment in cash, but they gave me a discount for the inconvenience. The location is perfect, right off the main square.…
