Una ciudad como todas las de oriente medio, caóticas, se circula muy rápido, tambièn, bastante sucia y con fuerte carácter islámico. Los hombres no pueden pasear con pantalones cortos y las mujeres sin mangas.

I spent four days in the city of the ancients and loved it. There is so much history and the people are great. No sign of any previous conflict and I happily walked the streets alone at times and at night.
The city is vibrant at night and gives a hint of what it must have been like before the war.
I visited many places in the old city but outside this was the Chapel of St Paul, a convent built behind the section of wall where he was lowered down the wall to make his escape.
Damascus is fantastic - go on you know you want to visit.

Damascus is interesting for the Old Town. The rest of the centre seems like an addition to it. There's an ok road leading from the Old City to the Railway Station and ok road from there to the right. Merjeh square is ok, but nothing special.
If you go from the Old Town (Suq al-Hamidiyya) to the right, first there's going to be some a bit shabby bazaars on the right, Barada, which is a bit stinky at this point, nice coctails. The road from there, Victoria Bridge and later on, is not very interesting. If you go left, there's a place where you can board many mini-buses. On the right there are some small hotels (the most frequented by the foreign tourists being, I believe, Al-Haramayn in my times), on the left there were some bazaars, but they were demolished and a new park, yet not very attractive, was placed there. if you go straight, you will find the big Three Seasons Hotel, and on the left, behind Barada and Jisr ar-Ra'is (The President's Bridge) an Ottoman-era mosque and a small souq, much less crowded than the Old Town and very nice and with good quality stuff.
There's a statue of Yuzuf al-Azma, a minister of defence of Syria who died fighting the French, in a square behind the aforementioned place with mini-buses. It's a place to buy pirated movies. There are many shops in that area, although allegedly the best clothes are in Sha'lan district. There's a small, but relatively nice Sibki park, who is an attraction of its own right for one reason.
The book shops can be found:
- on the way from the President's Bridge to the Railway Station and around it, also some in the street going from the Railway Station's entrance (there you can buy dictionaries etc).
- one on the street going from Yusuf al-Azma's statue in the direction of the Ministry of Finance, later that road, on the right.
There used to be also a yearly book fare in Damascus.
The best "Mexican chicken" can be found in the road between the Yusuf al-Azma's square and the Ministry of Finance. The best coctails were there, next to the Sibki Square, and on the way to the Old City.
On the way to the old city and in the old city you can also buy nuts, salted almonds etc. Very nice.

تعتبر العاصمة السورية دمشق من كبريات المدن في العالم، ووسطها أو قلبها بالتأكيد لابد أن يعبر عن هذه الحقيقة حركة ومتعة وحيوية.

Plenty of clothes shopping and souvenirs everywhere.
Traffic is chaotic though but luckily most places are within walking distance.
If you want to get a taxi you should agree on a price before you get in unless you don't care what you pay because the taxi drivers don't use their meters any more.

Культурно-историческое разнообразие в центре Дамаска удивляет. Это город в котором сочетается ислам с христианством в его наиразличнейших проявлениях. Здесь и Армянская Апостольская церковь, и марониты и католики и ...
