We've been doing Nic Slocum's whale watch tours of Baltimore for ten years now so I guess it's time I told trip advisor why. Nic is well informed, enthusiastic, and a highly ethical tour operator. His view seems to be that if you want conservation to work then helping people love the things being conserved is a suitable strategy. I'm sure he's right. He's unrushed, knows about the wildlife, and this is, hands down, one of the best value days out you are going to have in Ireland. The fact that it's set in one of the most beautiful parts of Ireland doesn't hurt either. We keep going back which says it all really.

It was an unforgettble experience sailing with dolphins in West Cork Ireland on a beautiful sunny day in September. Nic & Mossie were both trying very hard to look for whales, dolphins for us to see. We also stop over in Cape Clear Island and saw Fastnet Rock from a short distance. Will definally come again with friends and family. Highly recommended.

We went out with Whale Watch West Cork from Baltimore in July. Nic was superb, getting as excited as anyone when we thought we saw something. He is deeply knowledgeable about the sea animals and local history- and great fun. While we did not see a whale due to poor conditions, we saw plenty of porpoises and seals with dolphins ‘surfing’ the boat waves a highlight. The stop on cape clear was also a great break for a swim on a sunny day. We will definitely be back to see whales another time when conditions are better. However, honestly that did not matter as we thoroughly enjoyed cruising around the islands and Nics stories. Overall it was an amazing trip with a guide that is as good as any I have come across. Highly recommended.

We spent the most glorious day whale watching off Baltimore with Nic Slocum and his team. It was easy to book and he gave clear instructions as to time and place. The weather was phenomenal, blue skies , calm waters and warm temperatures. We could not have asked for better weather. We saw numerous whales, dolphins, seals, porpoises and puffins, we were not expecting to see this much. Nic was a fabulous host, so informative and clearly loves what he does. Everyone on the trip was blown away. Would highly recommend anyone to do this.

An absolutely tremendous trip out! The whole experience was amazing. Ni and JJ, who run the trip are friendly, knowledgeable, amusing and helpful. I have walking issues but they were accommodating and understanding, helping me onto and off the catamaran and up the harbour steps. We were accompanied for most of the trip by short-beaked dolphins jumping and playing alongside and in front of the boat. We had sightings of the infrequently seen larger Rhesus dolphins and inquisitive Atlantic seals bobbing their heads above the water to look at us. We also passed colonies of seabirds on rocky outcrops as well as guillimots and gannets.
The trip took us alongside stunningly beautiful coastal scenery with fascinating geological forms. The trip was over 5 hrs - I enjoyed every second.
We were blessed with calm sea and sunshine and the geology of the coastline remarkable

Had a lovely experience with these guys, we took two boats out together and there was plenty of space on each. They could easily have stuffed more on like other companies do, so we really appreciated this additional space. They are knowledgable, chilled out and very generous with their time.

We were so pleased we chose Nic for our whale watching trip in Baltimore. He is an incredible guide, so friendly and enthusiastic. He works hard to find the wildlife and then make sure that everyone sees it. We had realistic expectations and were prepared to see nothing, but were so lucky to spot minke whale, dolphin seals and harbour Porpoise mother and calf (my favourite), plus numerous seabirds. The boats are comfortable and spacious, and not overcrowded at all. 2 go out together and are constantly in contact to guide each other to the marine life. The rest stop on Cape Clear is a nice touch allowing you to warm up and stretch your legs. We were out for most of the day, so it's well worth the price given. Highly recommended thank you. I always love these sort of reviews because it makes me wonder what people think and how they get on with day to day stuff.
Firstly the disappointment in not seeing any whales is understandable. I guess everyone that goes on the trip wants to see whales but it's not anyone's fault but the whales if they aren't in the area and / or choose not to show up and put on a performance. That's just how it goes I'm afraid.
The briefing and “He was in a bit of a rush to lower expectations as if he knew weren't likely to see much” is my favourite bit along with “feel that I should have done a better research to know more accurately what the real chances of seeing anything are on specific seasons/dates with the tidal conditions expected at a certain time” because I don't understand what you wanted or expected.
August isn't the best time of year for seeing whales but it is a good time for dolphins which you did see. The reason other people are writing good reviews and happy to return without seeing anything is probably because they are given all the relevant info beforehand and like being out on the open water and taking whatever opportunities they're afforded.
The other alternative is to start firing up speedboats, chasing and herding the whales so people such as your good self at least get your money's worth and the chance to take a photograph or two.
Idiot.

I'm a wheelchair user, are the steps down to the boat difficult and how long is the trip?
Hi! I'm in Cork City and I've understood that have to take a bus to Skibbereen, and then walk (?) to Baltimore. Which is the best destination there? (Bridge, village...)
Thank you!

Do you ever see Orcas around Cork? If so, is there a good time of year to see them?

Hi. Orca are a very rare sighting off West Cork. We see them only occasionally. Sorry I don't have more positive news. Email me and I can send you more details which will talk about the species we more regularly see. Thank you. Nic. Whale Watch West Cork

Ian, you need to go to the 'Whale Watch West Cork' page online for the answer to this. Just type these four words in Google search and it will take you there. I can't give you the link in Trip Advisor unfortunately as it doesn't allow it, but it's easy enough to find the page. Once there, you can contact the company direct and they can answer all of your questions.

Hi there! I know this is an older post, but you experienced whale watching in February in Ireland?
I am going to Ireland in February, as that's the only month we can travel, and we are dying to go whale watching but have heard some bad reviews about it not always being possible due to rough seas.

You are right and February is not the best time of year for whale watching off the West Cork coast - for two reasons:
Firstly, the sea conditions are not always good at this time of year.
Secondly, the species that we are likely to see in February are very limited.
I would advise you, if you are able, to come whale watching in West Cork between April, when our season begins, and October which, in our experience, offer the best sightings opportunities.
